An all-optical temporal differentiator with a record operation bandwidth of ~25 THz (~200 nm, at least one order of magnitude larger than any previously reported temporal differentiation technology) is experimentally demonstrated based on a simple and compact all-fiber wavelength-selective directional coupler. The fabricated directional coupler can be used to process optical signals with time features as short as a few tens of femtosecond. A Gaussian-like optical pulse with a time-width of 250-fs is experimentally differentiated with a processing error of 2.1%. As an application example, a chirp-free flat-top pulse with a time-width of 540-fs is also successfully generated.

In this Letter, we present a theoretical study based on the Lorentz function and harmonic oscillator model to explore temporal dynamics of charge transfer plasmon (CTP) resonances. By fitting scattering curves and near-field oscillations, we determine the dephasing time of CTP modes in conductively connected gold nanodisk dimers. We show that, compared with the well-known particle plasmon and dimer plasmon modes, the CTP mode has a narrow spectral width and longer lifetime.

A central question in neuroscience is how synaptic plasticity shapes the feature selectivity of neurons in behaving animals. Hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons display one of the most striking forms of feature selectivity by forming spatially and contextually selective receptive fields called place fields, which serve as a model for studying the synaptic basis of learning and memory. Various forms of synaptic plasticity have been proposed as cellular substrates for the emergence of place fields.

The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond is an attractive resource for the generation of remote entangled states owing to its optically addressable and long-lived electronic spin. However, its low native fraction of coherent photon emission, ~3%, undermines the achievable spin-photon entanglement rates. Here, we couple a nitrogen-vacancy center with a narrow extrinsically-broadened linewidth (159 MHz), hosted in a micron-thin membrane, to an open microcavity.

Dynamic terahertz (THz) metasurface can feature modulated and multiplexed electromagnetic functionalities, important for wave-based computation, six-generation communications, and other applications. The versatile dynamic switching typically relies on a series of complex or incompatible multifield activations, with excessive system complexity, additional loss, slow modulation speed, and inertial time-varying properties, limiting more widespread applications. Here, a photon-induced ultrafast programmable THz metadevice is reoprted in time-frequency dimensions with polarization-decoupled temporal responses.

The tunability and spatial precision of paramagnetic molecules makes them attractive for quantum sensing. However, usual microwave-based detection methods have poor temporal and spatial resolution, and optical methods compatible with room-temperature solutions have remained elusive. In this study, we utilized pump-probe polarization spectroscopy to initialize and track electron spin coherence in a molecule.
