Cherenkov counting of the (90)Sr-(90)Y pure beta emitters in aqueous samples is an attractive method; but color quenching correction is needed, this being especially significant for urine which is characterized by a strong coloration. A quench correction method based on the external source of some liquid scintillation systems (named ESAR-External Source Area Ratio) was proposed for aqueous solutions. In the present work, the application of the ESAR method for determination of (90)Sr-(90)Y in human urine samples is described.

The mass attenuation coefficient of lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2)-filled polycarbonate (PC) composite films were determined both computationally (using Baltakmen's and Thummel empirical formulae) and experimentally using 204Tl and 90Sr-90Y radio-isotopes for films at different filler levels 0, 5, 15, 25, 35 and 50 weight percent (Wt.%). In comparison with Thummel empirical formula, the values obtained from Baltakmen's empirical formula is in good agreement with the experiment.

For the purpose of obtaining the smaller uncertainties for Hp(3) and Dp lens in 90Sr/90Y beta reference fields, a new dose determination method based on the Monte-Carlo simulation was proposed. The conversion coefficients from the absorbed dose in air, at the reference point of the extrapolation ionisation chamber, Dair, det to Hp(3; α) and the conversion factors from Dair, det to Dp lens(α) were calculated with EGSnrc, respectively, for the irradiation angles from 0° to 60°. Compared with the dose determination method in International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 6980 standard, the uncertainty reductions of 7.

A rapid analytical method for quantifying Sr in infant formula prior to secular equilibrium is presented. The approach is dependent on the use of two separations of Sr from Y, with the first providing an Y ingrowth start point and the second providing an Y ingrowth end point. Data were obtained at activity concentrations of approximately 6 Bq/kg and 160 Bq/kg, the latter of which is representative of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Derived Intervention Levels (DIL).

The in-situ characterisation of strontium-90 contamination of groundwater at nuclear decommissioning sites would represent a novel and cost-saving technology for the nuclear industry. However, beta particles are emitted over a continuous spectrum and it is difficult identify radionuclides due to the overlap of their spectra and the lack of characteristic features. This can be resolved by using predictive modelling to perform a maximum-likelihood estimation of the radionuclides present in a beta spectrum obtained with a semiconductor detector.

Based on the original work of Rutherford (Radio-activity, 1905) and Bateman (Proc Camb Philos Soc 15:423-427, 1910), the authors designed two schemes consisting of explicit equations as simple methods for accurately obtaining activity of Sr and Y before they reach secular equilibrium. Application of the methods to the Sr/Y system where Sr and Y are not in equilibrium will substantially reduce the time needed for determining activity of Sr because neither sequential measurements of Sr or Y (up to about 2 weeks) nor waiting for Sr and Y to reach equilibrium (more than 3 weeks) will be needed. We also implemented the explicit equations for decay/ingrowth correction of progeny's activity and applied them to the Zr/Nb system.
