MicroRNA: a third dimension in autophagy.

Cell Cycle

Published: January 2013

Autophagy is a catabolic process that allows cellular macromolecules to be broken down and recycled into metabolic precursors. It is a highly conserved, critical process, allowing cells to gain survival advantages under various stress situations due to growth and environmental changes. In the past few years, mounting evidence indicates that the post-transcriptional and translational controls mediated by non-coding miRNAs contribute significantly to autophagy in cancer. Such acute modulation of protein synthesis mediated by miRNAs provides cells with advantages in response to starvation, genotoxic stress and hypoxia. In this review, we highlight some of the important discoveries and molecular insights of miRNAs in regulating autophagy based on various cancer models.

MicroRNA-668 alleviates renal fibrosis through PPARα/PGC-1α pathway.

Eur J Med Res

December 2024

Department of Nephrology, The Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Background: The involvement of microRNA-668 (miR-668) in the onset and progression of renal fibrosis remains unclear. To this end, we aimed to explore the relevant mechanism of miR-668 in renal fibrosis.

Methods: C57BL/6 J male mice were randomly divided into sham-operated, unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), and UUO-fenofibrate groups.

Ischemia and hypoxia caused by vascular injury intensify nerve damage. Skin precursor-derived Schwann cells have demonstrated an accelerated in vivo pre-vascularization of tissue-engineered nerves. Furthermore, extracellular vesicles from skin precursor-derived Schwann cells (SKP-SC-EVs) show the potential in aiding peripheral nerve regeneration.

Background: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone malignancy in the world. Increasing studies indicate that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in ferroptosis and OS progression. Therefore, this study aims to identify ferroptosis- related lncRNAs (frlncRNAs), explore potential competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, and establish a new model for predicting OS prognosis.

Electronic address:

Rationale: Mutations in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene play an important role in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis, and downregulation of LRRK2 has become a promising therapy for PD. Here, we developed a synthetic biology strategy for the self-assembly and delivery of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) of LRRK2 into the substantia nigra via small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) using a genetic circuit (in the form of naked DNA plasmid) to attenuate PD-like phenotypes in mouse model.

Methods: We generated the genetic circuit encoding both a neuron-targeting rabies virus glycoprotein (RVG) tag and a LRRK2 siRNA under the control of a cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, and assessed its therapeutic effects using LRRK2 mouse models of PD.

Sevoflurane (Sev) has a cardioprotective role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI), but its mechanism has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate whether the circ_CDR1as/miR-671-5p/HMGA1 axis mediates the cardioprotective effect of Sev in MI/RI. Cardiomyocytes underwent hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) treatment was used to simulate MI/RI in vitro.
