Wristwatch-associated ski injury.

Upper limb injuries are a common occurrence in snowboarders, and these may be reduced by wearing wrist guards that transmit the force of the fall across the forearm. We present a case of a 26-year-old man who experienced a displaced left radial and ulnar fracture related to wearing a wristwatch while snowboarding. The wristwatch acted as a fulcrum around which the arm was fractured, serving as a stress riser that focused the force of the fall. The fracture was treated using open reduction and internal fixation.

Falls from escalators, although infrequent, can result in a wide array of injuries, ranging from minor lacerations to fatal outcomes. This retrospective study aims to detail the treatment and outcomes of eight patients who sustained blunt-force trauma from escalator falls and received care at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California. Among these eight patients, seven required hospitalization, with three necessitating intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and two patients ultimately succumbing to their injuries.

Unlabelled: Thermal spray, in general, is a process that involves forcing a melted substance, such as metal or ceramic in the form of wire or powder, onto the surface of a targeted object to enhance its desired surface properties. In this paper, the melted substance is metal wire generated by an electric arc and forcibly coated on a rotary iron substrate using compressed air. This thermal process is referred to as double-wire arc thermal spray.

Efficient Photolysis of Multidrug-Resistant Polymicrobial Biofilms.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Department of Dermatology, Harvard Medical School, 50 Blossom Street, Boston, MA, 02114, USA.

Chronic wounds are prone to infections with multidrug-resistant bacteria, forming polymicrobial biofilms that limit treatment options and increase the risk of severe complications. Current cleansing options are insufficient to disrupt and remove tenacious biofilms; antibiotic treatments, on the other hand, often fall short against these biofilm-embedded bacteria. This study explores an non-antibiotic approach that extends beyond conventional porphyrin-based phototherapy by using blue light (BL) in conjunction with ferric ions (Fe(III)) to disrupt and eradicate biofilms.

Contraction and relaxation within the heart is controlled by the coordinated rise and fall of Ca levels within the cytosol of cardiomyocytes. This requires Ca to be moved between subcellular and extracellular compartments with each cardiac cycle, since Ca is not destroyed or broken down by the excitation-contraction and relaxation cycles. Many cardiac pathologies alter Ca homeostasis and can lead to impaired contraction, incomplete relaxation, and arrhythmias.

Engineered Bacteria Manipulate Cysteine Metabolism to Boost Ferroptosis-Based Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Therapy.

Adv Mater

Engineering Research Center of Molecular & Neuroimaging, Ministry of Education, School of Life Science and Technology, Xidian University, Xi'an, 710126, P. R. China.

Cysteine metabolism is a key determinant of the defense against ferroptosis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Blocking cysteine metabolism may trigger potent ferroptosis in PDAC cells by generating lipid peroxides during tumor metabolic processes. However, current methods to limit cysteine availability fall short, failing to efficiently block cysteine metabolism due to inadequate tumor targeting and compensatory cysteine sources.
