Rasamsonia argillacea (formerly known as Geosmithia argillacea) is a fungus recently recognized as a pathogen of immunocompromised patients. Here we report the first case of Rasamsonia infection in an immunocompetent host, presenting as a pulmonary and aortic graft infection. Its morphological similarity to nonpathogenic Penicillium species delayed the diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates allergic bronchopulmonary mycoses (ABPM) in patients with cystic fibrosis, focusing on specific IgE responses to five non-Aspergillus molds.
  • Researchers analyzed serum samples from 238 patients across several European countries, finding higher levels of specific IgE in these patients compared to healthy controls.
  • The findings highlight the need for improved diagnostic tools for ABPM, as several cases were identified using a new scoring system, emphasizing the importance of non-A. fumigatus molds in these conditions.

A German Shepherd Dog diagnosed with based on fungal culture and DNA sequencing, is the first documented case in Australia, and the Southern Hemisphere. This species is part of complex, which is an emerging concern in immunocompromised human and veterinary patients. Intraventricular brain hemorrhage, noted on MRI, has not been reported previously in a dog with fungal encephalitis.

Case History: A 4-year-old, male neutered Borzoi presented for unlocalised pain and frequent episodes of vocalisation.

Clinical Findings: Pain was localised to the lumbar spine and radiographs revealed a L3-L4 lesion consistent with discospondylitis. The dog was treated for presumptive bacterial discospondylitis with surgical debridement, spinal stabilisation, and cephalexin.

The incidence of invasive sino-pulmonary diseases due to non- hyaline molds is increasing due to an enlarging and evolving population of immunosuppressed hosts as well as improvements in the capabilities of molecular-based diagnostics. Herein, we review the following opportunistic pathogens known to cause sinopulmonary disease, the most common manifestation of hyalohyphomycosis: spp., spp.

Article Synopsis
  • Olorofim is an experimental antifungal that effectively targets certain rare and resistant fungal infections, specifically those caused by filamentous fungi like Aspergillus and Scedosporium.
  • In a study with 160 clinical isolates, olorofim showed promising in vitro activity, with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values that suggest it works well even against strains less responsive to existing antifungals.
  • The findings indicate that olorofim could be a valuable option for treating stubborn fungal infections, but more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
