Ultrasound-Activated Near-Infrared-II Afterglow Luminescence for Precise Cancer Imaging.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

Afterglow fluorescence imaging has been extensively assessed in ultrasensitive bioimaging. Since it eliminates the need for real-time excitation light and thereby circumvents the autofluorescence background of tissue, it holds tremendous potential in accurate biomedical imaging. However, current afterglow probes are rare and emit light only in the visible to near-infrared (NIR) range, which is inadequate for imaging.

We propose extended one-way waveguide states of large-area propagation in a photonic crystal waveguide consisting of two honeycomb gyromagnetic photonic crystals with opposite external magnetic fields. When the width of the waveguide is small enough, the edge states along both boundaries of the waveguide couple with each other strongly and thus create the so-called extended one-way waveguide states. Of note, this structure supports both even and odd extended states, which can be excited under different excitation conditions.

Prenatal ethanol exposure impairs hippocampal plasticity and cognition in adolescent mice.

Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) induces a wide range of neurodevelopmental disabilities that are grouped under the term 'fetal alcohol spectrum disorders' (FASD). The effects of PAE on brain development are dependent on complex neurochemical events, including modification of AMPA receptors (AMPARs). We have recently found that chronic ethanol (EtOH) exposure decreases AMPA-mediated neurotransmission and expression through the overexpression of the specific microRNA (miR)137 and 501-3p, which target GluA1 AMPA subunit, in the developing hippocampus in vitro.

Corticosteroids are frequently prescribed across medical disciplines, yet they are associated with various adverse effects, including neuropsychiatric symptoms, documented since their introduction over 60 years ago. The cellular mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric symptoms are complex and somewhat obscure, involving multiple pathways. Notably, they include changes in excitability, cellular death of hippocampal and striatal neurons, and increased inflammation and oxidative stress.

Unlabelled: Human induced pluripotent stem-cell derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) have proven to be a revolutionary advance for tissue engineering, disease modeling, and drug testing and discovery. Computational modeling enables a detailed electrophysiological analysis that is otherwise difficult or impossible to achieve under strictly experimental settings. Action potential characteristics of hiPSC-CMs measured in our lab at four different pacing rates were used it to modify the computational Kernik-Clancy hiPSC-CM model.
