Aim: To carry out a detailed study of existing positions in the French public of the acceptability of refusing treatment because of alleged futility, and to try to link these to people's age, gender, and religious practice.

Method: 248 lay participants living in southern France were presented with 16 brief vignettes depicting a cancer patient at the end of life who asks his doctor to administer a new cancer treatment he has heard about. Considering that this treatment is futile in the patient's case, the doctor refuses to prescribe it.

Exploring the optimal reconstruction strategy for Enneking III defects in pelvis bone tumors: a finite element analysis.

J Orthop Surg Res

January 2025

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, 301 Yanchang Middle Road, Shanghai, 200072, People's Republic of China.

Background: Controversy exists regarding the reconstruction of bone defects in Enneking III. This study aimed to use the finite element analysis (FEA) method to clarify (1) the utility of reconstructing the pelvis Enneking III region and (2) the optimal approach for this reconstruction.

Methods: FEA models were generated for three types of Enneking III defects in the pelvis, replacing all the defect areas in region III with a sizable solid box for topology optimization (TO).

Background: The six core competencies of ACGME - patient care (PC), medical knowledge (MK), systems-based practice (SBP), practice-based learning and improvement (PBLI), professionalism (PROF), and interpersonal and communication skills (ICS) - represent domains in which physicians must ultimately demonstrate competence. Although the ACGME's six core competencies have been applied in Taiwan with the milestone project, the application of the six core competences in the Family Medicine milestones for residency training have not yet been established.

Methods: We recruited 61 family medicine physicians from 25 hospitals from four major geographic areas for a Delphi round one survey and 72 physicians from 27 hospitals for a Delphi round two survey.

Background: The discharge practices from the intensive care unit exhibit heterogeneity and the recognition of eligible patients for discharge is often delayed. Recognizing the importance of safe discharge, which aims to minimize readmission and mortality, we developed a dynamic machine-learning model. The model aims to accurately identify patients ready for discharge, offering a comparison of its effectiveness with physician decisions in terms of safety and discrepancies in discharge readiness assessment.

Enhancing doctor-patient communication using large language models for pathology report interpretation.

BMC Med Inform Decis Mak

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital, No. 83, Zhongshan East Road, Guiyang, Guizhou, 550000, China.

Background: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly utilized in healthcare settings. Postoperative pathology reports, which are essential for diagnosing and determining treatment strategies for surgical patients, frequently include complex data that can be challenging for patients to comprehend. This complexity can adversely affect the quality of communication between doctors and patients about their diagnosis and treatment options, potentially impacting patient outcomes such as understanding of their condition, treatment adherence, and overall satisfaction.
