The cerebellum, a part of the brain critically involved in motor learning and sensory adaptation, expresses high levels of the sodium-calcium exchanger (NCX) and the plasma membrane calcium ATPase (PMCA). Both these transporters control calcium dynamics at a variety of synapses, and here, we draw upon the available literature to discuss how NCX and PMCA work together to shape pre-synaptic calcium dynamics at cerebellar synapses.

Shaking it off: loss of NHE3-mediated calcium reabsorption is compensated by the distal nephron.

Sodium reabsorption is tightly coupled to calcium reabsorption in the proximal tubule via the action of the Na/H exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3). Poulsen et al. provide evidence of reduced proximal calcium reabsorption in kidney tubule-specific NHE3-deficient mice that is compensated distally, unaltered phosphate homeostasis, and NHE3 involvement in the hypocalciuric effect of thiazides.

Indoxyl Sulfate Induces Ventricular Arrhythmias Attenuated by Secretoneurin in Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Cardiomyocytes.

Cardiovasc Toxicol

January 2025

Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, No. 250, Wuxing St., Taipei, 11031, Taiwan.

Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) are major causes of sudden cardiac death in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Indoxyl sulfate (IS) is one common uremic toxin found in CKD patients. This study investigated whether IS could induce VAs via increasing right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) arrhythmogenesis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is tightly linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, calcium (Ca²⁺) imbalance, and oxidative stress. Mitochondrial Ca²⁺ is essential for regulating metabolic enzymes, maintaining the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, supporting the electron transport chain (ETC), and producing ATP. Additionally, Ca²⁺ modulates oxidative balance by regulating antioxidant enzymes and reactive oxygen species (ROS) clearance.

Adding colour to ion-selective membranes.

January 2025

Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Pasteura 1, 02-093, Warsaw, Poland. Electronic address:

An idea of using ion-exchanger salt containing optically active cations to prepare ion-selective membranes is proposed. Although the presence of an ion-exchanger in the composition of neutral ionophore based sensors is necessary, the choice of available salts for cation-selective sensors preparation, is usually limited to sodium or potassium compounds. In this work we propose application of an alternative salt, using a cation optically active both in absorption and emission mode as a mobile one.

Selective extraction of lithium over alkali and alkaline earth ions by synergistic solvent extraction.

Green Chem

January 2025

KU Leuven, Department of Chemistry Celestijnenlaan 200F P.O. box 2404 B-3001 Leuven Belgium

Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from natural surface and geothermal brines is very challenging due to the low ratio of lithium to other metals, and the lack of suitable materials that bind lithium with sufficiently high selectivity. In this paper, a synergistic solvent extraction system is described that comprises a liquid ion exchanger (saponified bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithiophosphoric acid) and a lithium-selective ligand (2,9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline) in an aliphatic diluent. The extraction mechanism was investigated and was confirmed to involve the binding of lithium to the selective ligand, while the liquid ion exchanger facilitates the transfer of metal ions from the aqueous to the organic phase.
