An association of mental health and in particular depression with cardiovascular disease has been shown in adults and to a lesser extent in the young. Recently improved measurement methods of carotid-intima media thickness (CIMT) and carotid stiffness (CS) allow more differentiated analyses of this link. We examined 4,361 participants of the nationwide KiGGS cohort aged 3-17 years at baseline and 14-28 years at follow-up.

Background: Vascular-based dementia risk scores (VDRS) which reliably predict risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs), may be useful to identify at-risk individuals for secondary prevention trials. Dementia risk scores have typically focused on predicting ADRD-associated symptoms, with fewer studies assessing capacity for detecting individuals with underlying brain pathologies. We compare the predictive value of two vascular-based risk scores (CAIDE and Reitz VDRSs) for discriminating AD-related histopathological and structural abnormalities, further considering race and gender differences.

Systolic Blood Pressure and Pulse Pressure in Heart Failure: Pooled Participant-Level Analysis of 4 Trials.

J Am Coll Cardiol

November 2024

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Hypertension is common in patients with heart failure with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction (HFmrEF/HFpEF), and current guidelines recommend treating systolic blood pressure (SBP) to a target <130 mm Hg. However, data supporting treatment to this target are limited. Additionally, pulse pressure (PP), a marker of aortic stiffness, has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, but its prognostic impact in HFpEF has not been extensively studied.

The broad spectrum of clinical manifestations caused by peripheral arterial disease [PAD] and the morphologic heterogeneity of associated atherosclerotic lesions present a considerable management challenge. Endovascular interventions are recognized an effective treatment for PAD. Within this revascularization strategy the role of atherectomy debulking modalities continue to evolve.

Objective: Myocardial protection is important for a successful procedure cardiac surgery, and the key element of myocardial protection is cardioplegia. We compared Del Nido cardioplegia (DN) and Bretschneider histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate cardioplegia (HTK) regarding cardioprotective effects in a porcine model of prolonged ischaemia.

Methods: Landrace pigs weighing 50-60 kg were randomized to receive either DN ( = 9) or HTK ( = 9).
