Purpose: To describe a series of 4 patients with Waldenström macroglobulinemia and serous macular detachment, and propose a mechanism for development of subretinal fluid based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings.

Design: Retrospective observational case series.

Methods: The records of patients with Waldenström macroglobulinemia and OCT documentation of serous macular detachment at Wills Eye Institute were reviewed. Data collection included clinical examination, as well as findings on fluorescein angiography (FA) and OCT.

Results: Four patients (8 eyes) with Waldenström macroglobulinemia and serous retinal detachment were identified. All eyes had varying degrees of venous stasis retinopathy and intraretinal edema overlying the macular detachment. Three patients had no FA leakage, while 1 patient had macular leakage in a petaloid pattern. Focal outer retinal defects within the detached retina were seen in 4 eyes on OCT imaging. In one eye, development of cystoid macular edema was observed before the outer retinal defect and serous macular detachment. All patients with serous macular detachment had some degree of outer retinal disruption.

Conclusion: Discontinuity of the outer retina within the macular detachment may enable immunoglobulins along with accumulated intraretinal fluid to flow into the subretinal space, creating a serous retinal detachment. Even with systemic treatment of the underlying Waldenström macroglobulinemia, the visual prognosis was guarded.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of fluid volume fluctuations quantified with artificial intelligence in optical coherence tomography scans during the maintenance phase and visual outcomes at 12 and 24 months in a real-world, multicentre, national cohort of treatment-naïve neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) eyes.

Methods: Demographics, visual acuity (VA) and number of injections were collected using the Fight Retinal Blindness tool. Intraretinal fluid (IRF), subretinal fluid (SRF), pigment epithelial detachment (PED), total fluid (TF) and central subfield thickness (CST) were quantified using the RetinAI Discovery tool.

Purpose: The study aimed to assess the reliability of tele-education in training a Malawian ophthalmology resident to interpret optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of patients with macular conditions.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 1000 macula-centered OCT image series from 1000 eyes of 1000 consecutive patients from Malawi, which involved initial interpretation by a German retina specialist (observer 1) (T). Observer 1 then trained a Malawian resident (observer 2) via email, and observer 2 independently interpreted images at T, followed by face-to-face training in Malawi and reinterpretation at T and T (3-month intervals).

The aim of the study was todescribe the clinical features, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging in patients with choroidal and retinal tumors. Ninety eyes of 89 patients with treatment-naive macular, midperipheral, and juxtapapillary choroidal and retinal tumors were retrospectively included in the study. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, B-mode ultrasonography, OCT, and FAF imaging.

Purpose: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a complication of retinal detachment which requires multiple vitreoretinal surgical interventions and frequent use of oil endotamponade. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of complications associated with the use of heavy silicone oil in the management of inferior PVR.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 20 eyes that underwent vitrectomy for inferior PVR with use of heavy silicone oil (Densiron 68) between March 2021 and October 2022 at Oxford Eye Hospital.

A meta-analysis of intravitreal ranibizumab versus laser photocoagulation for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

Purpose: Laser photocoagulation (LPC) has been a traditional treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). However, intravitreal anti-VEGF agents such as bevacizumab and ranibizumab (IVR) have also been increasingly used. This meta-analysis aims to rigorously compare IVR to LPC in the treatment of ROP.
