Fracture of the first rib usually results from high-impact, direct trauma. Stress fractures are less common and are associated with minimal morbidity. The case of a patient with a stress fracture resulting from the use of an exercise machine is reported. Previous reports have attributed stress and fatigue fractures of the first rib to the forces exerted by the scalene muscles. A new pathophysiologic mechanism involving the serratus anterior muscle is introduced and is supported by T2 relaxation times from magnetic resonance imaging. Stress and fatigue fractures of the first rib have minimal complications. An aggressive diagnostic evaluation of first rib fractures occurring by this mechanism is not warranted.

Purpose: Controversy exists regarding the optimal imaging modality (magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, stress radiographs) for identification of patients with grossly unstable thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries or Stener lesions. We characterize a radiographic sign for this purpose. The "displaced fleck sign" is a small avulsion fracture from the ulnar proximal phalanx base that is displaced proximal to the MCP joint line.

Background: Traumatic injuries, such as falling, car accidents, and crushing mostly cause spinal fractures in young and middle-aged people, and > 50% of them are thoracolumbar fractures. This kind of fracture is easily combined with serious injuries to peripheral nerves and soft tissues, which causes paralysis of the lower limbs if there is no timely rehabilitation treatment. Young patients with thoracolumbar fractures find it difficult to recover after the operation, and they are prone to depression, low self-esteem, and other negative emotions.

Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal development faces challenges due to the difficulty of stimulating fluid flow and heat-exchange fracture channels within deep, low-porosity, and low-permeability reservoirs. A liquid nitrogen cyclic cold shock method was proposed, using liquid nitrogen as a fracturing fluid. The large temperature difference between the liquid nitrogen and the hot rock induces thermal stress, forming a complex pore-fracture network.

Although China's low-permeability and tight oil reservoir utilization and newly proven reserves are growing annually, the overall recovery of such reservoirs is generally low. One of the main factors influencing the low recovery is the effect of intricate dynamic fracture propagations on the remaining oil distribution. Constrained by the evolution of an in situ stress field and the accumulation of fluid injection volumes, the growth of dynamic fractures allows a production profile of water breakthrough.

Previous studies suggest a relationship between femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and femoral neck stress fractures (FNSF), due to pathologic biomechanics in the setting of femoral head abutment (cam morphology) and/or acetabular overcoverage (pincer morphology). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between cam or pincer morphology and FNSF, compared to a control group of patients without hip pain. A retrospective review of the electronic medical record at a single institution was queried for patients with FNSF over a 10-year time period from January 2011-2021.
