We show that more than two generations of quarks and leptons are required to have an anomaly free discrete R symmetry larger than R parity, provided that the supersymmetric standard model can be minimally embedded into a grand unified theory. This connects an explanation for the number of generations with seemingly unrelated problems such as supersymmetry breaking, proton decay, the μ problem, and the cosmological constant through a discrete R symmetry. We also show that three generations is uniquely required by a nonanomalous discrete R symmetry in classes of grand unified theories such as the ones based on (semi)simple gauge groups.

Four genes-DAND5, PKD1L1, MMP21, and CIROP-form a genetic module that has specifically evolved in vertebrate species that harbor motile cilia in their left-right organizer (LRO). We find here that CIROZ (previously known as C1orf127) is also specifically expressed in the LRO of mice, frogs, and fish, where it encodes a protein with a signal peptide followed by 3 zona pellucida N domains, consistent with extracellular localization. We report 16 individuals from 10 families with bi-allelic CIROZ inactivation variants, which cause heterotaxy with congenital heart defects.

Novel patterns in discrete Ikeda map: Quint points and complex non-quantum chirality.

In this paper, the complex and dynamically rich distribution of stable phases in the well-known discrete Ikeda map is studied in detail. The unfolding patterns of these stable phases are described through three complementary stability diagrams: the Lyapunov stability diagram, the isoperiod stability diagram, and the isospike stability diagram. The adding-doubling complexification cascade and fascinating non-quantum chiral pairs are discovered, marking the first report of such structures in discrete mapping.
