Objective: To study the burning characteristics of moxa stick.

Methods: A self-designed moxa stick burning temperature measuring device, which was assembled with ALTEC intelligence digital setter and SJ-600 thermocouple, was used to conduct next four experiences: 1) embedding a thermocouple inside a moxa stick to measure peak burning temperature; 2) pulling a thermocouple embedded in the moxa stick at the proper rate to detect combustion stability; 3) elucidating temperature distribution of transverse section by measuring the temperature in the center, radius midpoint and lateral; 4) drawing temperature-time-space curves by pulling the thermocouples in the former three observation points.

Results: The experiment indicated that the burning temperature peak of three-year moxa stick (Hubei Herbal Medicine St. Qichun Technology Co., Ltd.) was 848 degrees C which had good combustion stability. Furthermore, the temperature in the center, radius midpoint and lateral of transverse section were 843 degrees C, 731 degrees C and 410 degrees C, respectively, and its burning temperature-time-space curves was drawn, which showed the real-time burning temperature and the peak burning temperature and were regarded as ultimate indice to integrate the formers.

Conclusion: The measuring system elaborately reflecting the burning features of moxa stick may provide reference for manufacture industry of moxa stick quality criteria for its convenience and accuracy.

Backgrounds: Warm needle acupuncture is a distinct form of acupuncture therapy in which, after the needle is inserted into the acupoint, a lit moxa stick is placed on the needle's handle.

Objective: This research aims to provide evidence for efficacy and safety of warm needle acupuncture for allergic rhinitis.

Search Strategies: Seven online databases were searched for study collection, which were published up to March 15th, 2022.

A fixation device for experimental rat in moxibustion was developed. Using this device, the points for moxibustion can be fully exposed, and the temperature of moxibustion be relatively constant. This fixation device consists of three parts: fixation seat, fixation clip and moxa-stick holder; characterized as the flexible fixation and easy operation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of indirect moxibustion using a moxa stick in reducing pain and improving quality of life for patients with back myofascitis, comparing it to topical diclofenac sodium gel treatment.
  • Seventy-two patients were split into two groups, with one receiving moxibustion treatment three times a week and the other using the gel three times daily for two weeks.
  • Results showed a significant reduction in pain scores (VAS and SF-MPQ) for the moxibustion group compared to the control group, indicating better pain management and clinical effects.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PDM) refers to the occurrence of spasmodic colicky pain in the lower abdomen without any obvious pelvic pathology, often accompanied by other systemic symptoms, which significantly reduces the quality of life of women with PDM, 45%-95% of menstrual women are affected by it. Despite the high incidence of PDM, it is often not well treated and is ignored by relevant researchers and women themselves. Herbs-partitioned moxibustion (HPM) is a characteristic external therapy in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is widely used to treat diseases in China; it treats diseases by applying a Chinese herbal formula on the patient's acupoints and then igniting moxa sticks on the herbal formula for moxibustion therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that has evolved from using manual moxa sticks to modern moxibustion devices, which incorporate infrared radiation for effectiveness.
  • The research evaluated the infrared radiation of these devices to find which material most closely matched the benefits of traditional moxa combustion.
  • Results indicated that materials like cardboard tubes and silica gels were superior in maintaining the thermal effects of moxibustion, with cardboard being particularly effective for prolonged infrared radiation delivery.
