The zebra finch is a superb natural animal model to study cognition and as such could contribute to the further understanding of nicotinic intervention therapies for patients suffering from cognitive impairment as observed in neurodegenerative disorders. Manual analysis of data produced by this model is extremely labour intensive, error-prone, and typically takes weeks to complete. We designed data acquisition methods, selected analysis algorithms, and developed software to efficiently and accurately automate the detection and classification of song production (cognitive functioning) and locomotor activity (physical condition). Our custom-designed software accurately classifies song and locomotor activities. After classification, the reduced data sets can be further analysed with popular tools, such as 'R'.

What makes animal gaits so audibly rhythmic? To answer this question, we recorded the footfall sound of 19 horses and quantified the rhythmic differences in the temporal structure of three natural gaits: walk, trot, and canter. Our analyses show that each gait displays a strikingly specific rhythmic pattern and that all gaits are organized according to small-integer ratios, those found when adjacent temporal intervals are related by a mathematically simple relationship of integer numbers. Walk and trot exhibit an isochronous structure (1:1)-similar to a ticking clock-while canter is characterized by three small-integer ratios (1:1, 1:2, 2:1).

This study explored the protective effect and potential mechanism of carvacrol acetate (CAA) on the oxidation of chlorpyrifos (CPF). A model of oxidative stimulus damage was established in Sprague-Dawley rats by subcutaneous injection of the CPF poison. PC12 cells were used to construct an oxidative injury model using CPF, and the protective effects and mechanism of action of CAA against CPF-induced oxidative damage were explored in vitro.

The study aimed to determine whether asymptomatic rats with cervical spinal cord compression (CSCC) experience more severe cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) compared with rats without CSCC under the same degree of minor trauma. Four weeks after the polyvinyl alcohol-polyacrylamide hydrogel was implanted into the C5 vertebral canal, asymptomatic rats were selected based on locomotor function score. Mild cervical SCI was subsequently established based on CSCC.
