Published: November 2012

Space-based gravitational wave detectors are conceived to detect gravitational waves in the low frequency range by measuring the distance between proof masses in spacecraft separated by millions of kilometers. One of the key elements is the telescope which has to have a dimensional stability better than 1 pm Hz(-1/2) at 3 mHz. In addition, the telescope structure must be light, strong, and stiff. For this reason a potential telescope structure consisting of a silicon carbide quadpod has been designed, constructed, and tested. We present dimensional stability results meeting the requirements at room temperature. Results at -60 °C are also shown although the requirements are not met due to temperature fluctuations in the setup.

White lies for coral reefs: Dynamics of two-patch coral reefs model with asymmetric dispersal.

J Theor Biol

Center for Mathematical Biosciences, School of Mathematics and Statistics, Northeast Normal University, Changchun, 130024, PR China. Electronic address:

Coral reef ecosystem is a crucial component of marine ecosystems and is undergoing severe degradation due to the combined dural impact of environmental changes and human activities. Soundscape technology is an innovative coral reef restoration approach that attracts fish to degraded reefs. Inspired by such technique, a five-dimensional mathematical dynamical model incorporating the asymmetric dispersal of parrotfish is formulated to characterize the dynamic interaction among macroalgae, coral, algal turf, and parrotfish in coral reef ecosystem.

This study investigates camel milk protein structural dynamics during digestion using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Two-Dimensional Infrared (2D-IR) homo-correlation and hetero-correlation analysis. The synchronous 2DIR homo-correlation map reveals that NH bending and C-N stretching vibrations (amide II) are sensitive to digestion, indicating significant impacts on secondary structures. The asynchronous 2DIR homo-correlation indicates a stepwise process, where initial disruptions in NH interactions precede changes in CO stretching vibrations (amide I), highlighting the sequence of structural alterations during protein unfolding and degradation.

A method to quantitate the stabilization of Mitochondria-Associated endoplasmic reticulum Membranes (MAMs) in a 3-dimensional (3D) neural model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is presented here. To begin, fresh human neuro progenitor ReN cells expressing β-amyloid precursor protein (APP) containing familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) or naïve ReN cells are grown in thin (1:100) Matrigel-coated tissue culture plates. After the cells reach confluency, these are electroporated with expression plasmids encoding red fluorescence protein (RFP)-conjugated mitochondria-binding sequence of AKAP1(34-63) (Mito-RFP) that detects mitochondria or constitutive MAM stabilizers MAM 1X or MAM 9X that stabilize tight (6 nm ± 1 nm gap width) or loose (24 nm ± 3 nm gap width) MAMs, respectively.

The therapeutic effectiveness of acupuncture relies on both safety and stability, making these factors essential in acupuncture manipulation research. However, manual manipulation introduces unavoidable inaccuracies, which can impact the reliability of research findings. To address this challenge, a unique lifting and thrusting manipulation control cannula was designed in this study, offering flexible adjustment of movement amplitude.
