The uptake of liposomal contents into Catharanthus roseus protoplasts has been quantitated. Hi.phest uptake was obtained from positively charged vesicles (1.09% of vesicle contents per 10(7) protoplasts) in the presence of 10% w/v polyethylene glycol 4000. Significant uptake was also observed from negatively charged vesicles (0.1% of vesicle contents per 10(7) protoplasts) in the presence of 25% polyethylene glycol 1540. The uptake of vesicle contents from negatively charged liposomes was confirmed by light microscopy after treatment of the protoplasts with liposomes loaded with the fluorescent dye 6-carboxyfluorescein. About 10% of the treated protoplasts exhibited intracellular fluorescence. No uptake from neutral liposomes was detected.

Background: Iron is an essential micronutrient for cell survival and growth; however, excess of this metal drives ferroptosis. Although maternal iron imbalance and placental hypoxia are independent contributors to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, the mechanisms by which their interaction impinge on maternal and placental health remain elusive.
Methods: We used placentae from normotensive and preeclampsia pregnancy cohorts, human H9 embryonic stem cells differentiated into cytotrophoblast-like cells, and placenta-specific preeclamptic mice.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are heterogeneously sized, cell-derived nanoparticles operating as proficient mediators of intercellular communication. They are produced by normal as well as diseased cells and carry a variety of cargo. While the molecular details of EV biology have been worked out over the past two decades, one question that continues to intrigue many is how are EVs able to evade the phagocytic immune cells while also being effectively internalized by the target cell or tissue.

Background: Fermentation of dietary fiber by the gut microbiota leads to the production of metabolites called short-chain fatty acids, which lower blood pressure and exert cardioprotective effects. Short-chain fatty acids activate host signaling responses via the functionally redundant receptors GPR41 and GPR43, which are highly expressed by immune cells. Whether and how these receptors protect against hypertension or mediate the cardioprotective effects of dietary fiber remains unknown.

The study of self-assembly in confined spaces has gained significant attention among amphiphilic superstructures and colloidal design. The additional complexity introduced by interactions between contents and their containers, along with the effects of shape and lipid mixing, makes multivesicular bodies an interesting subject of study. Despite its promising applications in biomedicine, such as drug delivery and biomimetic materials, much remains unexplored.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with the acceleration of lung aging, and the accumulation of senescent cells in lung tissue. MicroRNA (miR)-34a induces senescence by suppressing the anti-aging molecule, sirtuin-1 (SIRT1). Senescent cells spread senescence to neighbouring and distant cells, favouring COPD progression and its comorbidities.
