Objective: To analyze the cost-effectiveness of apixaban in the prevention of stroke in adult patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), compared to other direct-acting oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, rivaroxaban, edoxaban) and the vitamin K antagonist acenocoumarol, based on data on effectiveness in clinical practice in Spain obtained in the FANTASIIA study.
Research Design And Methods: A probabilistic Markov economic model (second-order Monte Carlo simulation) was performed to analyze the costs and utilities (quality-adjusted life years, QALYs) associated with the compared treatments, according to the different probabilities of stroke, major bleeding and death observed in FANTASIIA.
Results: The cost per QALY gained in the patient treated with apixaban versus comparators ranged from €2,919 to €7,462.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm abnormality, is linked to a higher risk of stroke. Traditionally, warfarin has been the primary anticoagulation treatment for reducing the stroke risk. The new standard of treatment by direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) offers greater benefits including improved efficacy and fewer adverse effects with reduced monitoring.

Background: Guideline-recommended strategies to interrupt chronic anticoagulation with warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) during the perioperative period of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) surgery differ worldwide. There is uncertainty concerning the benefits and harms of interrupted and uninterrupted anticoagulation in patients undergoing CIED surgery.
Objectives: To assess the benefits and harms of interrupted anticoagulation (IAC) with either warfarin or DOAC in the perioperative period of CIED surgery versus uninterrupted anticoagulation (UAC), with or without heparin bridging, during an equivalent time frame, for CIED surgery.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening condition with increasing global incidence, primarily caused by , especially methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). Biofilm formation by is a critical factor in pathogenesis, contributing to antimicrobial resistance and complicating the treatment of infections involving prosthetic valves and cardiovascular devices. Biofilms provide a protective matrix for MRSA, shielding it from antibiotics and host immune defenses, leading to persistent infections and increased complications, particularly in cases involving prosthetic materials.

Warfarin and direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are widely prescribed to patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) to reduce risk of stroke and systemic embolism (SE). This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of apixaban compared with warfarin, dabigatran and rivaroxaban, for patients with NVAF from a US healthcare payer (Medicare) perspective. A cohort-level Markov model was developed based on a previously published model, for the US setting, factoring in anticipated price decreases due to market entry of generic drugs.
