Published: October 2012

A multicore all-fiber probe is demonstrated that has been fabricated using an electric arc fusion splicer. Interference of the fiber output when coherent light is coupled into two cores is investigated. The properties of the fringes created when the fiber is probing different media were found to be in general agreement with a beam propagation method simulation. Optical manipulation of microspheres near to the end of the probe is examined and the potential for controlled trapping explored. Polymer microspheres with diameters of 2 microns were formed into regular patterns due to the presence of the interference fringes.

We have theoretically investigated the spatial-temporal dynamics of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through a two-slit plasmonic antenna under femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. The dynamic interference of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam with the transiently excited surface plasmon polariton waves are proposed to characterize the particular spatial-temporal evolutions of EOT. It is revealed that the dynamic EOT can be flexibly switched with tunable symmetry through the respective slit of a two-slit plasmonic antenna by manipulating the phase correlation of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam.

A robust five-degree-of-freedom (5-DOF) measurement system is proposed in this paper. The compact optical configuration with high resolution is designed based on lens combination and multiple reflections. Beam drift and dual-beam parallelism are monitored and compensated by autocollimator units and a polarizer unit respectively.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are increasingly requiring directional antennas that not only provide higher capacity, security, transmission range or robustness against interference, but also contribute with smart antenna capabilities such as adaptive beamforming or multi beam radiation patterns. Standard phased arrays provide these features, but employing feeding networks based on digitally controlled variable phase shifters (VPSs) which have the disadvantage of high cost and limited angular resolution. Instead, time-modulated arrays (TMAs) use switched feeding networks governed by digital periodic sequences which allow harmonic patterns to be radiated and endows (TMAs) with attractive multifunctional capabilities.

Switchable and reversible optical elements have potential applications in self-adaptive optics. Shape-memory polymer devices with adaptive properties could be easily switched under environment or field stimuli. Here, the laser beam interference technique was used to realize the periodic grating structures of the shape-memory polymer, and memory and recovery of the grating structures were performed.

Monitoring colorless electroactive chemicals in complex background based on electrochemical difference absorption spectroscopy with twin flow cells.

Conventional UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy is an economical and user-friendly technique for online monitoring, however, by which some electroactive chemicals are hardly determined in the presence of fluctuating background due to the formation of colored chemicals. Here, we propose an electrochemical difference absorption spectroscopy (EDAS) to accurately quantify colorless chemicals based on visible color change via electrolysis with strong variation in the background. EDAS is realized by twin spectroelectrochemical flow cells system, replacing the two cuvette cells of a dual beam spectrophotometer.
