Diameters, generations, and orders of branches in the bronchial tree.

J Appl Physiol (1985)

King Edward VII Hospital, Midhurst, West Sussex, United Kingdom.

Published: February 1990

Studies of bronchial tree data by West et al. (J. Appl. Physiol. 60: 1089-1097, 1986) have shown that plots of mean diameter against generation, using log-log scales, can be represented by a power function with harmonic modulations. Other studies have shown that the mean diameter of the airways is exponentially related to order of branching. This paper demonstrates that both observations are compatible with a fractal model of branching, and because airway branching is fractal, this may explain why both are also true of the bronchial tree. Furthermore, the exponential relationship of mean diameter with generation in the larger airways, demonstrated by Weibel, is shown to result from the exponential relation of diameter with order in the fractal model.

DNA is subject to continual damage, leaving each cell with thousands of individual DNA lesions at any given moment. The efficiency of DNA repair means that most known classes of lesion have a half-life of minutes to hours, but the extent to which DNA damage can persist for longer durations remains unknown. Here, using high-resolution phylogenetic trees from 89 donors, we identified mutations arising from 818 DNA lesions that persisted across multiple cell cycles in normal human stem cells from blood, liver and bronchial epithelium.

Pulmonary Aspiration Syndromes: An Imaging-based Review.

J Thorac Imaging

January 2025

Department of Radiodiagnosis and Interventional Radiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

The term "aspiration" describes lung injury that results from unintentional passage of contents other than air into the lungs and bronchial tree, commonly from the gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tracts. Only a small proportion of aspiration-related events are symptomatic, especially in predisposed individuals such as patients with diminished consciousness, impaired swallowing, oesophageal motility disorders, and reflux disease. Aspiration-related syndromes can be classified based on the onset of presentation, composition of the aspirated substance, and anatomic site of injury.

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous, sublingual, oral specific immunotherapy in patients who suffer from allergic conditions to pollen from trees, grasses and weeds, house dust mites and Alternaria alternata spores. A literature search was performed separately for each type of allergen and each administration route of the drug. As a result, it was found that all administration routes were quite effective.

Pulmonary overlap syndrome in a patient with bronchial asthma.

BMJ Case Rep

January 2025

Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, ESICPGIMSR, New Delhi, Delhi, India.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a disease of immunocompetent patients, and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is seen in immunocompromised patients. Hence, pulmonary overlap syndrome presenting with ABPA and invasive aspergillosis is extremely rare. We report a case of well-controlled bronchial asthma who presented with acute exacerbation and hypoxaemic respiratory failure.
