We demonstrate a novel dynamic BOTDA sensor based, for the first time to our knowledge, on the use of the Brillouin phase-shift in addition to the conventional Brillouin gain. This provides the advantage of measurements that are largely immune to variations in fiber attenuation or changes in pump pulse power. Furthermore, the optical detection deployed leads to an enhanced precision or measurement time and to the broadening of the measurement range. Proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate 1.66-kHz measurement rate with 1-m resolution over a 160 m sensing fiber length. Moreover, a measurement range of 2560 µε with a precision of 20 µε is successfully proved.

We propose a peak-tracking BOTDA (PT-BOTDA) equipped with an efficient dynamic Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) searching scheme based on ternary search. The proposed scheme establishes a feedback loop between the selected frequency and the corresponding Brillouin gain to reduce the required number of scanning frequencies in one measurement. We also demonstrate the performance evaluation of the proposed scheme under scenarios with different searching granularities and dynamic sensing ranges.

Hybrid systems based on Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) utilizing Rayleigh backscattering light wave as a probe have enabled single-end and long-range distributed sensing for multiple parameters. However, the spatial resolution for dynamic parameter measurement is limited, and the frequency scanning process of BOTDA is time-consuming. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid system that combines BOTDA and time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry (TGD-OFDR), aiming to enhance the spatial resolution of dynamic measurements without compromising the system's signal-to-noise ratio and eliminate the frequency scanning process of BOTDA.

To simplify the experimental equipment and improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the traditional Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) system, we propose a scheme using the frequency-agile technique to measure Brillouin gain and loss spectra simultaneously. The pump wave is modulated into the double-sideband frequency-agile pump pulse train (DSFA-PPT), and the continuous probe wave is up-shifted by a fixed frequency value. With the frequency-scanning of DSFA-PPT, pump pulses at the -1st-order sideband and the +1st-order sideband interact with the continuous probe wave via stimulated Brillouin scattering, respectively.

A significant spatial resolution enhancement scheme for digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based fast Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using frequency-agility probes, without sacrificing the frequency resolution. The proposed system ensures high spatial resolution by using short frame duration, meanwhile enabling high frequency resolution retrieval of the Brillouin gain spectrum using frequency interleaving of multiple frequency-agility DOFC probes. Additionally, quadratic phase coding is introduced to release the influence of the high peak to average power ratio of the probes.
