The IRPA13 Congress took place from 14-18 May 2012 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, and was attended by almost 1500 radiological protection professionals. The scientific programme of the Congress was designed to capture a snapshot of the profession's views of the current state of knowledge, and of the challenges seen for the coming years. This paper provides a summary of these results of the Congress in twelve key scientific areas that served as the structural backbone of IRPA13.

Expediated modeling of burn events results (EMBER): A screening-level dataset of 2023 ozone fire impacts in the US.

Data Brief

February 2025

Office of Air and Radiation, US Environmental Protection Agency, 109 TW Alexander Dr, PO Box 12055, RTP, NC 27711, USA.

The Expedited Modeling of Burn Events Results (EMBER) dataset consists of 36-km grid-spacing Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) photochemical modeling for the summer of 2023. For emissions, these simulations utilized representative monthly and day-of-week anthropogenic emissions from a recent year and preliminary day-specific 2023 fire emissions derived using BlueSky pipeline. The base model run simulated ozone concentrations across the contiguous US during Apr 11-Sep 29, 2023.

Background: Advancements in cardiac catheterization have improved survival for pediatric congenital heart disease patients, but the associated ionizing radiation risks necessitate ethical consideration.

Methods: This study presents an empirical model, developed from 3131 unique pediatric procedures, to establish alert levels based on a patient's lateral thickness of the thorax for various procedural categories during diagnostic or interventional cardiac catheterization. The model uses linear regression of logarithmic reference air kinetic energy released per unit mass (KERMA) and air KERMA area product, also referred to as dose area product, to set alert levels at the top 95% and 99% of patient data.

Background: Given the global prevalence of breast cancer and its high mortality rate, adherence to long-term anti-hormonal therapy is crucial for preventing recurrence and improving survival outcomes. Previous research demonstrates how psychological factors including depression and empowerment impact medication adherence. However, comprehensive studies remain limited, especially in Korea.

Temperature dynamics and mechanical properties analysis of carbon fiber epoxy composites radiated by nuclear explosion simulated light source.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Engineering Research Center of Flexible Radiation Protection Technology, Universities of Shaanxi Province, Xi'an Polytechnic University, Xi'an, 710048, Shaanxi, China.

The impact of light radiation, a predominant energy release mechanism in nuclear explosions, on material properties is of critical importance. This investigation employed an artificial light source to replicate the effects of nuclear explosion radiation and utilized a physical information neural network (PINN) to examine the temperature evolution and corresponding changes in the mechanical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CFEC). A light source simulating nuclear explosion's light radiation was built to irradiate the CFEC, then measure the reflection spectrum and temperature of samples.

Background: Since patients with congenital heart defects (CHD) frequently require life-long medical care and repeat invasive treatment, radiation exposure during interventional procedures is a relevant issue concerning potential radiation related risks. Therefore, an analysis on radiation data from the German Registry for Cardiac Operations and Interventions in patients with CHD was performed.

Methods: From January 2012 until December 2020 a total of 28,374 cardiac catheter interventions were recorded.
