Dielectric multilayer reflectors that are non-polarizing are an important class of optical device and have numerous applications within optical fibres [1], dielectric waveguides [2] and LEDs [3]. Here we report analyses of a biological non-polarizing optical mechanism found in the broadband guanine-cytoplasm "silver" multilayer reflectors of three species of fish. Present in the fish stratum argenteum are two populations of birefringent guanine crystal, each with their optic axes either parallel to the long axis of the crystal or perpendicular to the plane of the crystal. This arrangement neutralizes the polarization of reflection due the different interfacial Brewster's angles of each population. The fish reflective mechanism is distinct from existing non-polarizing mirror designs [4, 5, 6, 7] with the important feature that there is no refractive index contrast between the low index layers in the reflector and the external environment. It is a mechanism that could be readily manufactured and exploited in synthetic optical devices.

Article Synopsis
  • * The new directional radiative cooling glass (DRCG) uses a multilayer structure with specific materials to efficiently release heat by controlling the angles of thermal emissions.
  • * The DRCG has been shown to lower temperatures by over 1.5°C in hot urban settings and improves space-cooling performance as a window, contributing to the fight against urban heat islands.

A SAW device with a multi-layered piezoelectric substrate has excellent performance due to its high Q value. A multi-layer piezoelectric substrate combined with phononic crystal structures capable of acoustic wave reflection with a very small array can achieve miniaturization and high performance. In this paper, a honeycomb-shaped phononic crystal structure based on 42°Y-X LT/SiO/poly-Si/Si-layered substrate is proposed.

Stretchable Distributed Bragg Reflectors as Strain-Responsive Mechanochromic Sensors.

Mechanochromic materials exhibit color changes upon external mechanical stimuli, finding wide-ranging applications in colorimetric sensing, display technology, and anticounterfeiting measures. Many of these materials rely on fluorescence properties and therefore necessitate external optical or electrical excitation. However, for broader applicability, the detection of color changes by the naked eye only or without complicated detection instrumentation is highly desirable.

The black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) plays a significant role at the larval stage in the circular economy due to its ability to convert organic waste into valuable products for energy, food, feed, and agricultural applications. Many data are available on larval development and biomass generation, but basic research on this species is lacking and little is known about adult biology, in particular about the cues involved in sexual recognition. In the present study, using various instruments (stereomicroscope, scanning and transmission electron microscope, hyperspectral camera and spectrophotometer), wing ultrastructure of both sexes was analysed, reflectance and transmission spectra of the wings were measured and behavioural bioassays were carried out to measure male response to specific visual stimuli.

Modern optical systems are important components of contemporary electronics and communication technologies, and the design of new systems has led to many innovative breakthroughs. This paper introduces a novel application based on deep reinforcement learning, D3QN, which is a combination of the Dueling Architecture and Double Q-Network methods, to design distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). Traditional design methods are based on time-consuming iterative simulations, whereas D3QN is designed to optimize the multilayer structure of DBRs.
