Hot electron-induced cathodic electrochemiluminescence of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)/S(2)O(8)(2-) system was investigated at an oil film-covered carbon paste electrode (CPE) under cathodic pulse polarization for the first time. Compared with other electrodes, the CPE is of lower background, better stability and reproducibility. The method is also applied to the determination of catechol. Under the optimum conditions, the linear correlation between the quenched ECL intensity (ΔI) and the logarithm of catechol concentration (logC(catechol)) was observed over the range of 2.0×10(-10) mol/L-4.0×10(-9) mol/L and 4.0×10(-9) mol/L-4.0×10(-7) mol/L with the limit of detection (LOD) of 2.0×10(-10) mol/L, which is lower than the other reported methods. The proposed method is applied to determine catechol in reservoir water. The mean recoveries of 83.3%-99.0% and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.8%-2.2% were obtained.

Electron-Induced Damage by UV Photolysis of DNA Attached to Gold Nanoparticles.

Photolysis of DNA attached to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with ultraviolet (UV) photons induces DNA damage. The release of nucleobases (Cyt, Gua, Ade, and Thy) from DNA was the major reaction (99%) with an approximately equal release of pyrimidines and purines. This reaction contributes to the formation of abasic sites in DNA.

Effect of hot electron induced charge transfer generated by surface plasmon resonance on Ag@Au/ITO/PNTP systems.

April 2024

Department of Physics, Liaoning University, Shenyang 110036, PR China. Electronic address:

The present study discusses the fabrication of a bimetallic material consisting of silver nanorods and gold nanospheres (designated Ag@Au), and its surface modification with 4-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) after deposition on an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass sheet, followed by laser irradiation at various wavelengths. The results indicate that the reduction of PNTP is more complete under irradiation at 532 nm due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects of the gold and silver nanomaterials. Moreover, the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the PNTP adsorbed on the Ag@Au/ITO is found to be significantly stronger than that of PNTP adsorbed on Ag@Au alone, due to charge transfer (CT) at the interface.

Studying the nonlinear photoresponse of different materials, including III-V semiconductors, two-dimensional materials and many others, is attracting burgeoning interest in the terahertz (THz) field. Especially, developing field-effect transistor (FET)-based THz detectors with preferred nonlinear plasma-wave mechanisms in terms of high sensitivity, compactness and low cost is a high priority for advancing performance imaging or communication systems in daily life. However, as THz detectors continue to shrink in size, the impact of the hot-electron effect on device performance is impossible to ignore, and the physical process of THz conversion remains elusive.

Hot-Electron-Induced Photochemical Properties of CdSe/ZnSe Core/Shell Quantum Dots under an Ambient Environment.

Key Laboratory of Excited-State Materials of Zhejiang Province, and Department of Chemistry, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027, China.

Using CdSe/ZnSe core-shell quantum dots (QDs) as a model, we systematically investigate the photochemical properties of QDs with the ZnSe shells under an ambient environment, which show almost opposite responses to either oxygen or water in comparison with CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs. While the ZnSe shells provide an efficient potential barrier for photoinduced electron transfer from the core to the surface-adsorbed oxygen, they also act as a stepping stone for hot-electron transfer directly from the ZnSe shells to oxygen. The latter process is so effective and competes favorably with ultrafast relaxation of hot electrons from the ZnSe shells to the core QDs, which can completely quench the photoluminescence (PL) with saturated adsorption of oxygen (1 bar) and initiate oxidation of the surface anion sites.

Surveillance of iodine intake is important because either inadequate or excessive amount of iodine may lead to thyroid malfunctions. Herein, we report a method for fast iodide quantification based on a plasmonic hot electron-driven chemical reaction, which occurs on Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) coated with p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) molecules. Upon resonant light illumination, hot electron-hole pairs are generated in the NPs.
