Damage due to lightning when it strikes the face.

Forensic Sci Int

Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Smt. Kashibai Navale Medical College, Narhe, Pune 411041, Maharashtra, India.

Published: January 2013

A case of death due to lightning is discussed in reference to autopsy findings that revealed damage to the tongue, pharynx, larynx, sclera and oesophagus for the first time. The damage described in the present paper must be considered when there is direct lightning strike on the face.

Assessment of the hazard risks on HVDC transmission networks due to lightning strikes and faults.

PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Shoubra, Benha University, Cairo, Egypt.

Article Synopsis
  • - HVDC systems effectively lower electricity transmission losses over long distances but face high failure risks from faults and lightning, necessitating a detailed study of potential impacts in the Egypt-Saudi Arabia link using a transient circuit model.
  • - The study evaluates how different lightning strike locations affect transient overvoltages, especially at the rectifier station, revealing extreme voltages during significant lightning events and noting a substantial reduction in overvoltages with surge arresters.
  • - Findings indicate that DC pole-to-ground faults pose a significant risk, producing large overcurrents that can potentially damage the rectifier station, highlighting the importance of robust fault analysis for maintaining safe electrical production standards.

Low-dimensional -based carbon nanostructures, known for their remarkable transport properties and mechanical behaviors, are widely used as reinforcing phases in polymer composites to enhance their performance. While carbon nanocomposites are promising materials for extreme conditions, the damage mechanisms due to charge injection at the interfaces between carbon nanostructures and polymers remain unclear. Using first-principles calculations, we investigated ambipolar charging and structural responses at the interfaces between industrially relevant polymers and carbon nanotubes or graphene upon electron and hole injection.

Carbon nanotube films have drawn attention in the past decade as promising substitutes for aluminum or copper used in aircraft lightning strike protection (LSP) systems. Throughout this study, advanced lightweight lightning strike protection (LSP) composites are based on highly conductive super-aligned carbon nanotube films (SA-CNTFs) and a new isolation layer of zirconia fiber paper. The internal damage level of the composite laminate was assessed using a microfocus X-ray system and non-destructive ultrasonic techniques.

Getting complementary physical information from a single image acquisition is particularly valuable for materials analysis. Grating based X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) methods allow decoupling attenuation, phase and scattering information. However, the phase and scattering extraction processes can easily suffer from artefacts, which is detrimental to implement this imaging technique in societal applications.

Variance in multi-blade induced lightning overvoltages among different wind farm topologies.

PLoS One

September 2024

Faculty of Engineering at Shoubra, Department of Electrical Engineering, Benha University, Cairo, Egypt.

The impact of the topological formation of wind farms upon the lightning induced overvoltages injected into the grid was not covered earlier in literature. However, this topic is highly important to be investigated to allow the usage of the most reliable topology against lightning strikes. For such reason, the paper investigates this point with consideration of most damaging cases as lightning strikes to multi-blades.
