Lateral heterogeneity of plant thylakoid protein complexes: early reminiscences.

The concept that the two photosystems of photosynthesis cooperate in series, immortalized in Hill and Bendall's Z scheme, was still a black box that defined neither the structural nor the molecular organization of the thylakoid membrane network into grana and stroma thylakoids. The differentiation of the continuous thylakoid membrane into stacked grana thylakoids interconnected by single stroma thylakoids is a morphological reflection of the non-random distribution of photosystem II/light-harvesting complex of photosystem II, photosystem I and ATP synthase, which became known as lateral heterogeneity.

Learned action sequences are suggested to be organized hierarchically, but how the various hierarchical levels are processed by different cortical regions remains largely unknown. By training monkeys to perform heterogeneous saccade sequences, we investigated the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) in sequence planning and execution. The electrophysiological recording revealed that sequence-level initiation information was mostly signaled by DLPFC neurons, whereas subsequence-level transition was largely encoded by LIP neurons.

There has been an increasing need for small, low-cost, and low-power consumption optical transceivers for short-reach fiber links. Waveguide-integrated photodetectors (PDs) with wide bandwidth and high responsivity on Si photonics platforms are an essential element for these applications. We have fabricated an O-band membrane PD which is suitable for integration with high-performance III-V-based membrane devices such as lasers and modulators, and passive waveguide circuits on the Si photonics platforms.
