Biobanking rare gynaecological tumours - How harmonised is data collection?

Eur J Surg Oncol

October 2024

Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking, University of Malta, Msida, Malta. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - GYNOCARE aims to assess biobanks for rare gynaecological tumours to standardize sample collection, data handling, and consent processes for improved cross-border research and clinical trials.
  • - Two digital surveys were conducted across seven European countries, revealing that while tissue and blood samples were commonly stored, there were significant variations in clinical data documentation and connections to national registries.
  • - The findings indicate inconsistencies in consent procedures and data management, highlighting the need for further research to unify practices across Europe for better collaboration in gynaecological cancer research.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in low and lower-middle income countries. Data from the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) were used to evaluate the organization of structures and services for the provision of AKI care in world countries and ISN regions. An international survey of key stakeholders (clinicians, policymakers, and patient advocates) from countries affiliated with the ISN was conducted from July to September 2022 to assess structures and services for AKI care across countries.

Introduction: Evidence summaries offer a practical solution to overcoming some of the barriers present in evidence-based health care, such as lack of access to evidence at the point of care, and the knowledge and expertise to evaluate the quality and translate the evidence into clinical decision-making. However, lack of transparency in reporting and inconsistencies in the methodology of evidence summary development have previously been cited and pose problems for end-users (eg, clinicians, policymakers).

Oak Ridge National Laboratory , Oak Ridge, TN 37831, USA.

This theme issue collects together papers summarising the conceptual design of the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP). In 2019, the UK government funded the first design stages of a prototype fusion powerplant based on a compact toroidal geometry, called STEP. The primary technical aims of STEP are to produce net energy, to be self-sufficient in tritium fuel and to demonstrate a maintenance regime that would extrapolate to appropriate availability for commercial powerplants.
