Rocky Mountain spotted fever is caused by Rickettsia rickettsii infection. R. rickettsii can be transmitted to mammals, including humans, through the bite of an infected hard-bodied tick of the family Ixodidae. Since the R. rickettsii genome contains only one cold-shock-like protein and given the essential nature of cold-shock proteins in other bacteria, the structure of the cold-shock-like protein from R. rickettsii was investigated. With the exception of a short α-helix found between β-strands 3 and 4, the solution structure of the R. rickettsii cold-shock-like protein has the typical Greek-key five-stranded β-barrel structure found in most cold-shock domains. Additionally, the R. rickettsii cold-shock-like protein, with a ΔG of unfolding of 18.4 kJ mol(-1), has a similar stability when compared with other bacterial cold-shock proteins.

The growth and reproduction of microorganisms are dependent on nutrient supply. Here, Milk and LB media were utilized as nutrition sources for Escherichia coli, and the changes in bacterial and secretory proteins at 3 time points (3, 9, and 18 h) in the growth cycle were studied using a label-free proteomics technique. The findings revealed that the abundances of bacterial intracellular proteins inosine/xanthosine triphosphatase and universal stress protein F increase dramatically during the growth phase in milk and LB media.

A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, aerobic, motile, and spore-forming bacterium, designated SCL10, was isolated from exposure to Co-60 radiation. In this study, whole-genome sequencing was performed to identify the strain as and functional characterization, with a focus on stress resistance. The genome of the SCL10 strain was sequenced and assembled, revealing a size of 4,979,182 bp and 5167 coding genes.

Six genes encoding cold-shock-like proteins, including cspE, are contained within the genome of Acinetobacter oleivorans DR1. All six genes are similar in size as well as amino acid identity, but appear to be differentially regulated under stressful conditions. Four of these genes (cspA, cspB, cspC and cspE) were functionally important during cold shock because of their gradual upregulation during a temperature decrease under our assay conditions.
