Background: Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are natural dairy food components that exhibit a unique body of potential health benefits in animals and man, including anti-cardiovascular disease and anti-cancer effects. Several studies have demonstrated that fatty acid synthase (FAS) levels (protein and mRNA) are over expressed in many carcinomas. Sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) are transcription factors that regulate genes involved in lipid metabolism, including FAS.

Methods: Breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 were treated with CLAs to investigate the regulation of SREBP-1c and FAS expression.

Results: In MDA-MB-231 cells, SREBP-1c and FAS were co-ordinately decreased by treatment with 25 μM CLA 9-11 and 10-12. In MCF-7 cells, the decrease in SREBP-1c and FAS expression was dependant on the concentration of CLA used.

Conclusions: The data suggest a differential effect of CLAs on SREBP-1c and FAS in estrogen receptor-positive (MCF-7) compared to estrogen receptor-negative (MDA-MB-231) breast cancer cells.

Background: Disorders of lipid metabolism are critical factors in the progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). However, the characteristics of lipid metabolism and related regulatory mechanisms of CLL remain unclear.

Methods: Hence, we identified altered metabolites and aberrant lipid metabolism pathways in patients with CLL by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based non-targeted lipidomics.

Electronic address:

For many viruses, controlling the process of infection is largely dependent on the enzymes of the fatty acid synthesis (FAS) pathway. An appealing therapeutic target in antiviral research is fatty acid synthetase (FASN), a crucial enzyme in the FAS pathway. Bovine viral diarrhea, caused by the Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), is a significant viral infectious disease posing a substantial threat to global animal husbandry.

The aim of this study was to investigate the ameliorative effects of pterostilbene (PTE), a polyphenolic compound, on stress-induced lipid metabolic disorders in the liver of broiler chickens. Six hundred healthy, 1-day-old Arbor Acres with similar weight were randomly assigned to five groups, each consisting of eight replicates with 15 broilers per replicate. The groups included: a control group (fed a basal diet), and four groups treated with corticosterone (CORT) at varying dietary levels of PTE supplementation: CORT (0 mg/kg PTE), CORT-PT200 (200 mg/kg PTE), CORT-PT400 (400 mg/kg PTE), and CORT-PT600 (600 mg/kg PTE).

The mechanism of DEHP-induced lipid accumulation in liver of female zebrafish.

December 2024

Gansu Key Laboratory of Biomonitoring and Bioremediation for Environmental Pollution, School of Life Sciences, Lanzhou University, China. Electronic address:

Diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is a typical environmental pollutant and poses a potential threat to organisms by disrupting the lipid metabolism. This study found that DEHP at environmental concentrations, led to lipid accumulation in female zebrafish, as indicated by significant increases in the content of total cholesterol, triglycerides and the lipid droplets, in a concentration-dependent manner. However, how DEHP induces the lipid accumulation remains poorly understood.

Based on the modified traditional Chinese formula, Compound Oolong tea (WLT) is composed of six herbal medicines which have beneficial effects. The present study aimed to assess the effects of WLT on lipid metabolism and gut microbiota in the mouse obesity model.Totally 32 mice were randomized into 4 groups including normal control (NC), high-fat diet model (HFD), positive control (PC) receiving atorvastatin 10 mg/kg/d, and WLT group with WLT water extra 300 mg/kg/d.
