Oyster leaf (Mertensia maritima), also called vegetarian oyster, has a surprising oyster-like aroma. Its volatile composition was investigated here for the first time. In total, 109 compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and quantified by GC-FID. The use of GC-olfactometry on both polar and nonpolar columns allowed the detection of the molecules having an oyster-like, marine odor. Four compounds were identified and confirmed by synthesis: (Z)-3-nonenal, (Z)-1,5-octadien-3-ol, (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienal, and (Z)-1,5-octadien-3-one. After evaluation of freshly prepared reference samples, these compounds were confirmed to be reminiscent of the oyster-like marine notes perceived in the tasting of cut leaves.

Soil heavy metal pollution is a major abiotic stressor frequently encountered by plants in conjunction with other biotic stresses like insect herbivory. Yet, it remains largely unexplored how soil metal pollution and insect herbivory act together to influence emissions of plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which mediate multiple ecological functions and play crucial roles in atmospheric processes. Here, we assessed the individual and combined effects of soil cadium (Cd) pollution and insect herbivory by Clostera anachoreta on VOC emissions from the seedlings of eastern cottonwood Populus deltoides, and whether these effects depend on plant sex.

This study investigates the phenolic compounds (PC), volatile compounds (VC), and fatty acids (FA) of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) derived from the Turkish olive variety "Sarı Ulak", along with ADMET, DFT, molecular docking, and gene network analyses of significant molecules identified within the EVOO. Chromatographic methods (GC-FID, HPLC) were employed to characterize FA, PC, and VC profiles, while quality parameters, antioxidant activities (TAC, ABTS, DPPH) were assessed via spectrophotometry. The analysis revealed a complex composition of 40 volatile compounds, with estragole, 7-hydroxyheptene-1, and 3-methoxycinnamaldehyde as the primary components.

This work aimed to extract silica from combination of rice husk (RH and Rice straw (RS) by optimizing the ash digesting process parameters with the aid of response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of three independent ash digestion process factors like sodium hydroxide concentration (1-3 M), temperature (60-120 °C) and time (1-3 h), for silica production from the mixture of rice husk (RH) and rice straw (RS) were studied. A quadratic model was used to correlate the interaction effects of the independent variables for maximum silica production at the optimum process parameters by employing central composite design (CCD) with RSM.

Cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) technology has begun to be adopted for drinking water pipe repairs, and limited information exists about its drinking water quality impacts. CIPP involves the manufacture of a new plastic pipe inside a buried damaged pipe. In this study, the chemical composition of the raw materials and CIPP water quality impacts were examined.

Chilled beef is a perishable food product. Due to the broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties of chitosan, and the biodegradability of PLLA, chitosan and PLLA are introduced double bonding groups to obtain Chitosan-graft-Glycidyl methacrylate (Cs-g-GMA) and Poly(L-lactic acid)-co-poly(butylene itaconate) (PLBI), respectively. Cs-g-GMA is then grafted onto the surface of PLBI films by UV curing to produce PLBI/Cs-g-GMA films with non-migratory, broad-spectrum antimicrobial, biodegradable, and possess good oxygen barrier properties, compared to current antimicrobial films.
