Mechanical factors such as stresses and strains play a major role in the growth and remodelling of soft biological tissues. The main constituents of tissue undergo different processes reacting to mechanical stimulus. Thereby, the characterisation of growth and remodelling requires an accurate estimation of the stresses and strains of their main components. Many soft tissues can be considered as composite materials and can be analysed using an appropriate rule of mixtures. Particularly, arterial tissue can be modelled as an isotropic soft matrix reinforced with preferentially oriented collagen fibres. An inverse approach to obtain the mechanical characterisation of each main component is proposed in this work. The procedure is based on a rule of mixtures raised in a finite deformation framework and generalised to include kinematics and compatibility equations for serial-parallel behaviour. This methodology allows obtaining the stress-strain relationship of the components fitting experimental data.

Illite mineral is present in shale rocks, and its wettability behavior is significant for the oil and gas industry. In this work, the pH effects on the affinity between the (001) and (010) crystallographic planes of illite K(SiAl)(AlMg)O(OH) and direct and inverse emulsions were studied using molecular dynamics simulations. To develop the simulations, an atomistic model of illite was constructed following Löwenstein's rule.

In recent years, concerns regarding the toxicity of organic UV filters in sunscreen products have increased. While sunscreen products contain multiple UV filters in combination, current understanding on their co-occurrence patterns and mixture toxicities is still limited. This study utilized a public database, "Hwahae", and analyzed 2183 sunscreen products marketed in South Korea as of 2019, using an association rule mining (ARM) to elucidate their co-occurrence patterns.

Intermetallics, which encompass a wide range of compounds, often exhibit similar or closely related crystal structures, resulting in various intermetallic systems with structurally derivative phases. This study examines the hypothesis that deformation behavior can be transferred from fundamental building blocks to structurally related phases using the binary samarium-cobalt system. The response of soft materials to an imposed oscillatory stress is typically frequency dependent, with the most utilized frequency range falling in the range of 10-10 rad/s. In contrast to most conventional contact techniques for measuring material elasticity, like tensile or shear rheology and atomic force microscopy, or invasive techniques using probes, such as microrheology, Brillouin light spectroscopy (BLS) offers an optical, noncontact, label-free, submicron resolution and three-dimensional (3D) mapping approach to access the mechanical moduli at GHz frequencies. Currently, the correlation between the experimental viscoelastic (at lower frequencies) and elastic (at higher frequencies) moduli has fundamental and practical relevance, but remains unclear.
