Multilayer mirrors with enhanced bandwidth were developed with special performances for dense plasma diagnostics and mainly for high spatial resolution x-ray imaging. The multilayer coatings are designed to provide broadband x-ray reflectance at low grazing incidence angles. They are deposited onto toroidal mirror substrates. Our research is directed at the development of non-periodic (depth graded) W∕Si multilayer specifically designed for use in the 1 to 30 keV photon energy band. First, we present a study for a 5 to 22 keV x-ray spectral window at 0.45° grazing angle. The goal is to obtain a high and constant reflectivity. Second, we have modeled a broadband mirror coating for harder x-rays in the range from 10 to 30 keV, with a non-periodic structure containing 300 W∕SiC layers with periods in the range from 0.8 to 4 nm, designed for 0.35° grazing incidence angle.

Thickness Dependent Structural Transition in Ph-BTBT-10 Thin Films and Stabilization of the Ubiquitous Interface Bilayer.

The influence of the film/substrate interface and the role of film thickness on the structural transition temperature for thin films of the asymmetric BTBT derivative 7-decyl-2-phenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-][1]-benzothiophene (Ph-BTBT-10) have been addressed by using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and synchrotron grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). Our data strongly suggest that the structural transformation from a single-layer phase to the thermodynamically stable bilayer structure develops from the bottom of the film to its surface. Contrary to observations in other organic semiconductor films, notably, the thinner the Ph-BTBT-10 film, the lower is the transition temperature.

Background: spp. are protozoan parasites that infect the gastrointestinal tract of various animals, including goats, and can also contaminate water sources, posing a significant public health risk. Detecting oocysts in fecal and water samples is critical for understanding the epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis and implementing appropriate control measures.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the structural and electron transport properties of a specialized swallow-tailed PDI derivative in thin film form.
  • The research reveals that thermal processing creates a new soft-crystalline mesophase, enhancing charge transport properties in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
  • Improvements in device architecture and preparation methods lead to increased electron mobility and overall performance, establishing melt-processing as an effective fabrication technique for high-performance OFETs.

Maintaining hexagonal structures through interfacial positioning of crosslinkers for nanofiltration.

J Colloid Interface Sci

December 2024

Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University, Geelong VIC 3216, Australia. Electronic address:

Hypothesis: Optimizing interfacial positioning of crosslinkers within a reactive self-assembled hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystals (HLLC) system could assist in retaining the hexagonal structure during polymerization and thereby improving water filtration performances of the as-synthesized nanofiltration membranes.

Experiments: The positioning of the hydrophilic crosslinker, poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), within the reactive HLLC system was systematically investigated using H and C solid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The structural variation and water filtration performances of these HLLC systems with/without crosslinkers after polymerization were further studied using grazing incidence SAXS (GISAXS) and crossflow filtration tests, respectively.

Optimization of CZTSe Thin Films Using Sequential Annealing in Selenium and Tin-Selenium Environments.

CuZnSnSe (CZTSe) is a promising material for thin-film solar cells due to its suitable band gap, high absorption coefficient, and composition of earth-abundant and nontoxic elements. In this study, we prepared CZTSe thin films from Cu/SnSe and ZnSe stacks using a two-step annealing process. Initially, Cu-Sn-Se (CTSe) films were synthesized by sequential deposition and annealing of Cu and SnSe precursors in either a selenium (Se) or tin-selenium (Sn+Se) atmosphere.
