Absorption features from K-shell aluminum z-pinch plasmas have recently been studied on Zebra, the 1.7 MA pulse power generator at the Nevada Terawatt Facility. In particular, tungsten plasma has been used as a semi-backlighter source in the generation of aluminum K-shell absorption spectra by placing a single Al wire at or near the end of a single planar W array. All spectroscopic experimental results were recorded using a time-integrated, spatially resolved convex potassium hydrogen phthalate (KAP) crystal spectrometer. Other diagnostics used to study these plasmas included x-ray detectors, optical imaging, laser shadowgraphy, and time-gated and time-integrated x-ray pinhole imagers. Through comparisons with previous publications, Al K-shell absorption lines are shown to be from much lower electron temperature (∼10-40 eV) plasmas than emission spectra (∼350-500 eV).

This paper present a novel, integrated compressed ultrafast photography system for comprehensive measurement of the aluminium planar wire array Z-Pinch evolution process. The system incorporates a large array streak camera and embedded encoding to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the "QiangGuang-I" pulsed power facility, we recorded the complete continuous 2D implosion process of planar wire array Z-Pinch for the first time.

This work is devoted to the development of a method for the reconstruction of plasma extreme UV (EUV) spectra recorded by a three frame grazing incidence spectrograph (GIS-3D). The spectrograph provides registration of radiation reflected from the diffraction grating (DG) on a three-frame detector based on a microchannel plate with a scintillator screen and registration on a CCD camera, with an exposure time of one frame of ∼1.5 ns.

Stabilization of Liner Implosions via a Dynamic Screw Pinch.

Phys Rev Lett

July 2020

Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109, USA.

Magnetically driven implosions are susceptible to magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, including the magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability (MRTI). To reduce MRTI growth in solid-metal liner implosions, the use of a dynamic screw pinch (DSP) has been proposed [P. F.

A scintillator-based soft X-ray streak camera system for Z-pinch experiments on the Primary Test Stand.

Rev Sci Instrum

July 2019

Key Laboratory of Pulsed Power, Institute of Fluid Physics, China Academy of Engineering Physics, P.O. Box 919-108, Mianyang, Sichuan 621999, People's Republic of China.

A soft x-ray streak camera system based on the conversion of fast scintillator has been developed to diagnose 10-MA Z-pinch implosions on the Primary Test Stand facility. The streak camera system is used to measure the continuous time history of the 0.2-10 keV x-ray emission from pinch plasmas and proved to be free from the intense electromagnetic environment effectively during the discharge of the Primary Test Stand.

Spatially resolved single crystal x-ray spectropolarimetry of wire array z-pinch plasmas.

Rev Sci Instrum

January 2018

Physics Department and Nevada Terawatt Facility, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada 89557, USA.

A recently developed single-crystal x-ray spectropolarimeter has been used to record paired sets of polarization-dependent and axially resolved x-ray spectra emitted by wire array z-pinches. In this measurement, two internal planes inside a suitable crystal diffract the x-rays into two perpendicular directions that are normal to each other, thereby separating incident x-rays into their linearly polarized components. This paper gives considerations for fielding the instrument on extended sources.
