The objective of the present study was to develop an anti-inflammatory prolonged action formulation for local injection in prefilled syringes. Hydrocortisone acetate (HA) was selected as a model corticosteroid drug to be incorporated in poly(lactic-co-glycolic) (PLGA) microspheres. The formulation was obtained by supercritical emulsion extraction in continuous operation layout (SEE-C) to test the process robustness for a continuous industrial production. PLGA/HA microspheres with mean sizes between 1 μm (SD±0.20) and 5 μm (SD±1.45) were obtained when operating at 80 bar and 38 °C with a L/G ratio of 0.1 in the counter-current tower. The produced microdevices showed excellent encapsulation efficiencies between 75% and 80%, depending on the emulsion formulations tested, and different sustained release in the range of 6-15 days. In dependence of the different emulsion (single or double) processed by SEE-C, different products can be obtained according to the therapeutic requests. SEE-C confirms to be an innovative and flexible technology for biopolymer microdevices production, coupling the efficiency of continuous operation to the easy process scalability.

This study investigated the potential health benefits of spearmint, orange peel, and baby sage oleoresins extracted using supercritical CO and subsequently emulsified. The oleoresins were incorporated into dark chocolate, and their impact on physicochemical properties was evaluated. Characterization revealed rich sources of phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and volatile compounds in these oleoresins.

This study aimed to evaluate different pre-treatments on cricket flour (CF), solvent-defatting (CFH), and supercritical-defatting (CFS) to obtain cricket protein concentrate (CPC) by ultrafiltration (UF)-diafiltration (DF) and evaluate the UF-DF performance, techno-functional properties, and digestibility. Results showed that defatting efficiency was 63 % and 85 % for solvent-defatting and supercritical fluid defatting, respectively. The supercritical fluid extraction process decreased the protein solubility and affected the UF performance, decreasing protein retention by 33 %.

The extraction of astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis involves the utilization of petroleum-derived organic solvents or supercritical CO, beset by safety concerns, high costs, and environmental sustainability limitations. This study, in contrast, employed a method involving the adjustment of salt concentration, propylene glycol, and vegetable oil fraction to disrupt emulsion in aqueous cell lysates for facilitating the separation of astaxanthin. Under optimized conditions, an astaxanthin-containing oil with a content of 1.

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are gaining significant attention in the pharmaceutical industry due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability, making them a popular functional nanocarrier. SLNs are a popular nanocarrier due to their ability to bypass the spleen and liver, offer high drug stability, and improve bioavailability, sterilization, immobilization, targeted drug release, and biocompatible ingredients. This article discusses various SLN preparation techniques, including high shear homogenization, hot homogenization, cold homogenization, microemulsion-based, solvent evaporation, solvent emulsification-evaporation, supercritical fluid-based, spray drying, double emulsion, and precipitation techniques, focusing on methodological aspects.

The use of medicinal substances in nanosized forms (nanoforms, nanoparticles) allows the therapeutic effectiveness of pharmaceutical preparations to be increased due to several factors: (1) the high specific surface area of nanomaterials, and (2) the high concentration of surface-active centers interacting with biological objects. In the case of drug nanoforms, even low concentrations of a bioactive substance can have a significant therapeutic effect on living organisms. These effects allow pharmacists to use lower doses of active components, consequently lowering the toxic side effects of pharmaceutical nanoform preparations.
