The thermal stability of superhydrophobic, nanostructured surfaces after thermal annealing was explored. Flat surfaces coated with hydrophobic diamond-like carbon (DLC) via plasma polymerization of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) showed a gradual decrease in the water contact angle from 90(o) to 60(o) while nanostructured surfaces maintained superhydrophobicity with more than 150° for annealing temperatures between 25 and 300°C. It was also found that surfaces with nanostructures having an aspect ratio of more than 5.2 may maintain superhydrophobicity for annealing temperatures as high as 350°C; above this temperature, however, the hydrophobicity on surfaces with lower aspect ratio nanostructures gradually degraded. It was observed that regardless of the aspect ratios of the nanostructure, all superhydrophobic surfaces became superhydrophilic after annealing at temperatures higher than 500°C.

In this study, a novel hybrid nanostructure consisting of acid-decorated chitosan and magnetic AlFeO nanoparticles was fabricated. The acid-decorated chitosan provided a stable and biocompatible matrix for the magnetic AlFeO nanoparticles. Various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), specific surface area (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize and confirm the successful synthesis of the hybrid nanostructure.

For lithium-ion batteries, silicon monoxide is a potential anode material, but its application is limited by its relatively large irreversible capacity loss, which leads to its low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). In this study, we conduct a two-step reaction for the formation of silicon oxide-based materials, including a magnesiothermic reduction of SiO with Mg, followed by the solid-state lithiation of silicon oxide with LiCO. Our results demonstrate that Mg can reduce SiO to Si and form MgSiO, while LiCO reacts with SiO to form LiSiO.

Along with the development of miniaturization, integration, and high power of electronic chips in the 5G and artificial intelligence era and their urgent need for technologies enabled to solve high heat flux dissipation in limited space, investigating bioinspired extreme superwettability surfaces with high-efficiency condensation heat transfer (CHT) performance has attracted great interest in academic and industrial communities. Compared with filmwise condensation of flat hydrophilic surfaces featured with continuous liquid films, dropwise condensation of flat hydrophobic surfaces is a more efficient type of energy transport way. However, discrete condensate drops can only shed off the hydrophobic flat surfaces under gravity until their sizes reach the capillary length of liquid, e.

Self-organization realizes various nanostructures to control material properties such as superconducting vortex pinning and thermal conductivity. However, the self-organization of nucleation and growth is constrained by the growth geometric symmetry. To realize highly controlled three-dimensional nanostructures by self-organization, nanostructure formation that breaks the growth geometric symmetry thermodynamically and kinetically, such as tilted or in-plane aligned nanostructures, is a challenging issue.

A binder-free and freestanding electrode was designed by uniformly immobilizing carbon quantum dot (CQD)-anchored polyaniline (PANI) heterostructures onto electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) a facile hierarchical assembly process. The fabricated freestanding CNF/PANI/CQD electrode exhibits a unique three-dimensional (3D) network nanostructure, which accelerates ion migration between the interior and surface of the electrode, thereby enhancing its charging and discharging performance. Moreover, the functional groups on the surface of CQDs could anchor PANI through possible chemical bonding, which not only improves the stability of the PANI/CQD heterojunction but also creates an additional conductive channel for the PANI polymer.
