The safety of steviol glycoside sweeteners has been extensively reviewed in the literature. National and international food safety agencies and approximately 20 expert panels have concluded that steviol glycosides, including the widely used sweeteners stevioside and rebaudioside A, are not genotoxic. However, concern has been expressed in recent publications that steviol glycosides may be mutagenic based on select studies representing a small fraction of the overall database, and it has been suggested that further in vivo genotoxicity studies are required to complete their safety profiles. To address the utility of conducting additional in vivo genotoxicity studies, this review evaluates the specific genotoxicity studies that are the sources of concern, and evaluates the adequacy of the database including more recent genotoxicity data not mentioned in those publications. The current database of in vitro and in vivo studies for steviol glycosides is robust and does not indicate that either stevioside or rebaudioside A are genotoxic. This, combined with a lack of evidence for neoplasm development in rat bioassays, establish the safety of all steviol glycosides with respect to their genotoxic/carcinogenic potential.

Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are efficient elicitors of secondary metabolites. To investigate the influence of LED light on steviol glycosides (SGs) and phenolic compounds biosynthesis, stevia shoots were cultured under the following LED lights: white-WL, blue-B, red-R, 70% red and 30% blue-RB, 50% UV, 35% red and 15% blue-RBUV, 50% green, 35% red and 15% blue-RBG, 50% yellow, 35% red and 15% blue-RBY, 50% far-red, 35% red and 15% blue-RBFR and white fluorescent light (WFl, control). RBG light stimulated shoots' biomass production.

Due to an increasing use of high-intensity sweeteners in foods and potential health implications of high levels exposure, the intake of high-intensity sweeteners present in the diet of the Brazilian population and the self-declared diabetic population, based on national consumption data from the 2017-2018 Family Budget Survey (POF), was estimated. The occurrence of the high-intensity sweeteners was established by labeling foods obtained in physical stores and online, in two scenarios: average and maximum concentration. Food consumption data were derived for the self-declared diabetic Brazilian population and the Brazilian population for average consumers and consumers only, stratified by: sex, age, habitation, and regions from Brazil.
