Optimizing Mechanical Ventilation: A Clinical and Practical Bedside Method for the Identification and Management of Patient-Ventilator Asynchronies in Critical Care.

J Clin Med

January 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Hospital de São Francisco Xavier, Unidade Local de Saúde Lisboa Ocidental (ULSLO), Estrada Forte do Alto Duque, 1449-005 Lisbon, Portugal.

The prompt identification and correction of patient-ventilator asynchronies (PVA) remain a cornerstone for ensuring the quality of respiratory failure treatment and the prevention of further injury to critically ill patients. These disruptions, whether due to over- or under-assistance, have a profound clinical impact not only on the respiratory mechanics and the mortality associated with mechanical ventilation but also on the patient's cardiac output and hemodynamic profile. Strong evidence has demonstrated that these frequently occurring and often underdiagnosed events have significant prognostic value for mechanical ventilation outcomes and are strongly associated with prolonged ICU stays and hospital mortality.

Selective withdrawal is an effective measure to mitigate the adverse effects caused by reservoir construction. The main types of selective withdrawal include multi-level withdrawal and internal weir withdrawal, each with distinct characteristics. It is urgent to elucidate the thermal response differences between these two types of selective withdrawal to improve scheduling accuracy.

Metacontrast masking does not change with different display technologies: A comparison of CRT and LCD monitors.

Behav Res Methods

December 2024

Department of Experimental Psychology, Georg Elias Müller Institute, University of Goettingen, Goßlertstr. 14, 37077, Goettingen, Germany.

Most vision labs have had to replace the formerly dominant CRT screens with LCDs and several studies have investigated whether changing the display type leads to changes in perceptual phenomena, since fundamental properties of the stimulation, e.g., the transition time between frames, differ between these different display technologies.

Impairments of attention in RRMS patients: the role of disease duration.

J Clin Exp Neuropsychol

November 2024

Department of Psychology, Acibadem University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Introduction: The extent to which different types of attention are affected in RRMS based on disease duration has not been extensively analyzed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether MS patients differ compared to healthy individuals in a homogeneous sample of RRMS patients in terms of attention types and from which year of MS attention deficit starts. Another aim of the study was to examine the effect of MS duration and stimulus onset asynchrony on dual task performance.

When changing habitat during migration or ontogenesis, fish encounter changes of the visual environment, among which the most important is the spectral composition of light and turbidity. This leads to changes in the behavior, morphology, and physiology of the visual system, in particular, spectral sensitivity, which is determined by the properties of visual pigments. The masked greenling Hexagrammos octogrammus has an additional factor that shapes effective spectral sensitivity-the presence of densely bright orange cornea which reversibly changes its density depending on the state of light/dark adaptation.
