The first part of this paper explores what we mean by the word 'sensitising' and presents an argument for conceiving of 'sensitising' in a way that respects the intellectual as well as the healing roles of medical practitioners, while taking the concept further as 'informed reflection'. It also makes a case for the importance of sensitising in medical 'praxis'. The second part of the paper describes an approach which is based partly on a module that has been taught in a medical programme.

Intraoperative sensitization in trigeminal region caused by postherpetic neuralgia: a case report.

J Med Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Pain, The Third Xiangya Hospital and Institute of Pain Medicine, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Background: Interventional therapy of trigeminal neuropathic pain has been well documented; however, intraoperative monitoring and management of pain hypersensitivity remains barely reported, which may pose a great challenge for pain physicians as well as anesthesiologists.

Case Presentation: A 77-year-old Han Chinese male, who suffered from severe craniofacial postherpetic neuralgia, underwent pulsed radiofrequency of trigeminal ganglion in the authors' department twice. The authors successfully placed a radiofrequency needle through the foramen ovale during the first procedure with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (dexmedetomidine).

Efficient CO Electrocarboxylation Using Dye-Sensitized Photovoltaics.

Molecules

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Liaocheng University, Liaocheng 252059, China.

This paper presents the solar-driven electrocarboxylation of 2-bromopyridine (2-BP) with CO into high-value-added chemicals 2-picolinic acid (2-PA) using dye-sensitized photovoltaics under simulated sunlight. Using three series-connected photovoltaic modules and an Ag electrode with excellent catalytic performance, a Faraday efficiency () of 33.3% is obtained for 2-PA under mild conditions.

The role of interoceptive sensibility on central sensitization to pain in vulvodynia.

J Sex Med

January 2025

Italian Association for Applied Sexology and Psychology, 20124 Milan, Italy.

Background: Interoception may be linked to central sensitization in chronic pain.

Aim: We aimed to provide evidence about the role of interoceptive sensibility on central sensitization in vulvodynia.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a sample of females who received a diagnosis of vulvodynia filled out validated questionnaires relative to the individual level of interoceptive sensibility and the symptoms of central sensitization.

A Multimodal Approach to Symptomatic Endometriosis: A Proposed Algorithm for Clinical Management.

Reprod Sci

January 2025

Gynecology Unit, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy.

Recent research has proven that peripheral (PS) and central sensitization (CS), mental health, and myofascial dysfunction all play a role, alongside nociception, in the genesis and in the perpetuation of endometriosis' symptoms. However, such components of pain are still largely ignored in clinical practice, although not considering such contributors may entail serious consequences on women's health, including the choice of unnecessary surgery and leaving the real causes of pain untreated. At the present time, we are facing a paradox by which 25-40% of women who undergo laparoscopic surgery for pelvic pain do not have an obvious diagnosis, while the percentage of women with endometriosis who have signs of CS, of depressive or anxiety disorders, or who have an increased pelvic muscle tone ammounts to 41-55%, 15-88% and 28-73%, respectively.

Phenothiazine-based photosensitizers bear the intrinsic potential to substitute various expensive organometallic dyes owing to the strong electron-donating nature of the former. If coupled with a strong acceptor unit and the length of N-alkyl chain is appropriately chosen, they can easily produce high efficiency levels in dye-sensitized solar cells. Here, three novel D-A dyes containing 1H-tetrazole-5-acrylic acid as an acceptor were synthesized by varying the N-alkyl chain length at its phenothiazine core and were exploited in dye-sensitized solar cells.
