Making light work of RAFT conjugation: a non-activated RAFT agent at the end of RAFT polymers can readily be coupled with ortho-quinodimethanes (photoenols) in a photo-triggered Diels-Alder reaction under mild conditions without catalyst. The method is universal and opens the door for the conjugation of a large number of RAFT-prepared polymers with photoenol-functionalized (macro)molecules. (RAFT=reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer.).

Construction of Loop Polyzwitterion Brushes on PET Sheets via the Chain-End Closure Strategy To Improve Antifouling and Hemocompatible Properties.

Steric stabilization and lubrication give loop polymer brushes enhanced antifouling properties. In the study, linear zwitterionic poly(NMASMCMS) brushes were first constructed on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surface through surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization. The tethered linear brushes on sheets were then thiolated with ethanolamine, followed by oxidation to form loop brushes.

Acid-Enhanced Photoiniferter Polymerization under Visible Light.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2024

ETH Zurich, Materials, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 1-5/10, 8093, Zürich, SWITZERLAND.

Photoiniferter (PI) is a promising polymerization methodology, often used to overcome restrictions posed by thermal reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT)  polymerization. However, in the overwhelming majority of reports, high energy UV irradiation is required to effectively trigger photolysis of RAFT agents and facilitate the polymerization, significantly limiting its potential, scope, and applicability. Although visible light PI has emerged as a highly attractive alternative, most current approaches are limited to the synthesis of lower molecular weight polymers, and typically suffer from prolonged reaction times, extended induction periods, and higher dispersities.

Advancements in polymer chemistry have enabled the design of macromolecular structures with tailored properties for diverse applications. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization is a controlled technique for precise polymer design. Automation tools further enhance polymer synthesis by enabling the rapid, reproducible preparation of polymer libraries.

Two-dimensional (2D) polymer network monolayers with novel block architectures were fabricated via sequential copolymerization within a pillared-layer metal-organic framework (MOF) that served as the reaction template. The MOF provides a confined 2D nanospace, restricting the crosslinking copolymerization of vinyl monomers to two dimensions. Sequential crosslinking copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene, regulated by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process, resulted in the formation of 2D block architectures with 'patchy' domains consisting of crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene segments.

The individualized administration and pharmacokinetics profiling are integral to the safe use of antibody drugs in immunotherapy. Here, we propose an electrochemical platform for the highly sensitive and selective detection of antibody drugs, taking advantage of the affinity capture by the peptide mimotopes together with the signal amplification by the biologically-driven RAFT polymerization (BDRP). Briefly, the BDRP-based platform involves the capture of antibody drugs by peptide mimotopes, the labeling of multiple reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) agents to the glycan chains of antibody drugs, and the BDRP-enabled controlled recruitment of numerous redox labels.
