Pharmacokinetics, biodistribution and antitumour activity of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-loaded polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) blend microspheres were investigated in chemically induced colorectal cancer in albino male Wistar rats and compared with pristine 5-FU given as a suspension. The microspheres were characterised for particle size, encapsulation efficiency, in vitro release and in vitro cytotoxicity on human HT-29 colon cancer cell line. Spherical particles with a mean size of 44 ± 11 µm were obtained that showed sustained release of 5-FU. A high concentration of 5-FU was achieved in colonic tissues and significant reduction in tumour volume and multiplicity were observed in animals treated with 5-FU-loaded microspheres. The decreased levels of plasma albumin, creatinine, leucocytopenia and thrombocytopenia were observed in animals for 5-FU microspheres compared to the standard 5-FU formulation. The results suggest the extended release of 5-FU from the PHB-CAP blend microspheres in colonic region to enhance the antitumour efficacy.

Carbon microspheres (CMSs) are recognized as highly effective microwave absorbers due to their exceptional wave absorption properties. In this study, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin, a metamaterial, was chemically bonded to CMSs─considered a conjugated carbon structure─using a 1,3-dibromopropane linker to explore the synergistic properties and microwave absorption capabilities of the synthesized composite. The synthesized structures were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, FE-SEM, Fourier transform infrared, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and VNA analyses.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) represent the most common type of nervous system injuries, resulting in 5 million injuries per year. Current gold standard, autografts, still carry several limitations, including the inappropriate type, size, and function matches in grafted nerves, lack of autologous donor sites, neuroma formation, and secondary surgery incisions. Polymeric nerve conduits, also known as nerve guides, can help overcome the aforementioned issues that limit nerve recovery and regeneration by reducing tissue fibrosis, misdirection of regenerating axons, and the inability to maintain long- distance axonal growth.

Transforming oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) waste into value-added cellulose as a reinforcement agent for eco-friendly slow-release fertilizer (SRF) composites is a strategy to achieve clean and sustainable production. OPEFB cellulose was isolated by alkalization (10 % w/v NaOH) for 1 h and bleaching (30 % v/v HO) for 1.5 h.

Bioactive microspheres coated with acellular extracellular matrix (aECM) have received extensive attention in bone tissue engineering. In this work, biomimetic microspheres with different aECM ratios, uniform size and controllable size were prepared easily by blending natural porcine dermal aECM and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) using electrohydrodynamic spraying and solidification actuated by solvent extraction method. In this work, the appropriate polymer concentration and preparation voltage were investigated, and the surface morphology of the microspheres was observed by scanning electron microscope.

To prepare a PLGA microsphere loaded with the antipsychotic Blonanserin without release leg period and released in a near-zero model for long time, in this study, 15 kDa and 75 kDa PLGA were chosen to be mixed with different ratios, and Blonanserin microspheres (Bn-MS) without significant differences in the particle size, drug loading capacity, and encapsulation rate were prepared by microfluidics. The release kinetic model was fitted to the release behavior by monitoring the changes in particle size and morphology during the Bn-MS release to investigate microspheres' in vitro release pattern. The results showed that the addition of appropriate ratios of mixed molecular weights to Bn-MS could eliminate the release hysteresis period.
