Published: October 2012

This unit covers statistical methods of linkage analysis that do not require the assumption of a detailed genetic model, as is required for standard lod score analysis. The unit has been updated to include the latest methods in sib-pair analysis, including updates to using the software program SIBPAL as well as the relative-pair analysis software applications GENEHUNTER, GENEHUNTER PLUS, and Merlin.

Article Synopsis
  • Research focused on thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) of coal bottom ash from a Serbian power plant, revealing its composition and thermal behavior through TG-DTG and XRD analyses.
  • The study unveiled complex reaction mechanisms, including endothermic dissociation reactions and autocatalytic processes involving chromium for enhanced ethylene polymerization.
  • Results indicated that the thermal treatment improved the physicochemical properties of the ash and showcased its high thermal stability, suggesting potential for safer, environmentally friendly applications.

Control of the family of systems that can be represented in the Euler Lagrange (EL) form is both challenging from a theoretical perspective and applicable to a broad spectrum of real systems. For this type of control problem, given that any parameter estimation error and disturbances are not directly addressed, the system performance deteriorates, and stability cannot be deduced in advance. Considering these issues, this work presents the design and the corresponding analysis of a saturation function based, model-free, continuous robust controller for mechanical systems represented in the EL form.

The pyrolysis characteristics of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) wastes were investigated in a batch pyrolyzer in the temperature range of 550-650 °C for a varying heating rate (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 °C/min) alone and using kaolin catalyst (10, 15, and 20% w/w). The yield distribution of various products under varying operating conditions was investigated, and the corresponding favourable conditions for maximum yield of pyrolytic oil (PO) were identified. The possible effect of the catalyst on pyrolysis kinetics was explored by extracting activation energies from the TGA experiments.

Background: The majority of men referred with a raised PSA for suspected prostate cancer will receive unnecessary tertiary investigations including MRI and biopsy. Here, we compared different types of biomarkers to refine tertiary referrals and when different definitions of clinically significant cancer were used.

Methods: Data and samples from 798 men referred for a raised PSA (≥ 3 ng/mL) and investigated through an MRI-guided biopsy pathway were accessed for this study.
