The method to observe the exact morphology of swelled seaweed as an example of biological material by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with the aid of hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL); 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is reported. Seaweed was first swelled in 3.5% NaCl solution and then treated with the IL and water mixture in 1:7 weight ratios and centrifuged to remove the excess IL solution. Thus treated seaweed maintained its morphology even at high magnification and did not show drying in the FE-SEM chamber. This observation technique might be useful for various kinds of biological materials to be observed under FE-SEM.

Seaweeds are natural sources of sulfated polysaccharides (SPs), biopolymers with remarkable pharmacological properties, including biological actions capable of attenuating components of the inflammatory process such as edema, cytokines, cell migration and pain. Our results confirm that SPs obtained from Gracilaria domingensis (SP-GD) are agarans, primarily composed of residues of β-d-galactopyranose 6-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-α-l-galactopyranose. Specifically, SP-GD at a dose of 10 mg/kg was effective in significantly reducing paw edema induced by carrageenan or histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, 48/80 and prostaglandin E2.

This study aimed to assess the anti-inflammatory properties of a bioactive glutamic-alanine rich glycoprotein (GP) derived from on both LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, peritoneal macrophages, and mouse models of carrageenan- and xylene-induced inflammation, investigating the underlying molecular mechanisms. In both in-vitro and in-vivo settings, GP was found to reduce the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) while also inhibiting the production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E (PGE) in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation.

Rising concerns around plastic pollution from single-use plastic (SUPs), especially food packaging, have driven interest in sustainable alternatives. As such, algae biomass has gained attention for bioplastic production due to algae's rapid growth and abundant polysaccharides. This research focuses on extracting carrageenan from Kappaphycus alvarezii, extensively cultivated in Sabah, Malaysia, and utilizing it in combination with starch and glycerol to develop algae-based films.

Although introducing Enteromorpha prolifera sulfated polysaccharide (SPEP) enhances the mechanical properties of hydrogels significantly, little is known about the effects of polysaccharide and ion addition on morphological and physicochemical properties of conductive hydrogel. Therefore, the Poly (acrylic acid)/SPEP/Al (PAA/SPEP/Al) hydrogels with different SPEP and Al addition were synthesized by simple one-pot method. The porosity, tensile strength, and swelling ration increased, while compressive strength, elongation at break, self-healing, self-adhesion properties increased first and then decreased as SPEP addition increased from 0 % to 3.
