Published: July 2012

The development of dual-imaging enabled cancer-targeting nanoparticles (DICT-NPs) is reported based on newly developed biodegradable photoluminescent polymers and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. DICT-NPs possess capabilities of dual-imaging (magnetic resonance imaging and optical imaging), magnetic targeting, and potentially selective targeting for cancer cells. The development of DICT-NPs address the concerns in dual-imaging nanoparticles where photobleaching organic dyes and cytotoxic quantum dots are usually adopted.

Cancer remains a formidable global health challenge, demanding the exploration of innovative treatment modalities with minimized side effects. One promising avenue involves the synergistic integration of targeted photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT), utilizing specially designed functional nanomaterials for precise cancer diagnosis and treatment. This study introduces a composite biomaterial, anti-epidermal growth factor receptor-conjugated manganese core phthalocyanine bismuth (anti-EGFR-MPB), synthesized for precise cancer imaging and treatment.

Treatment of highly aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in the clinic is challenging. Here, a liposome nanodrug (LP@PFH@HMME) integrating imaging agents and therapeutic agents for bimodal imaging-guided sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is developed, which boosted immunogenicity to enable potent immunotherapy via immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) in TNBC. In the acidic tumor microenvironment (TME), LP@PFH@HMME undergoes "nano-to-micro" transformation due to a pH-responsive lipid fusion, which makes droplets much more sensitive to ultrasound (US) in contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and SDT studies.

Background: Inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic eczema, and contact dermatitis pose diagnostic challenges due to their diverse clinical presentations and the need for rapid and precise diagnostic assessment.

Objective: While recent studies described non-invasive imaging devices such as Optical coherence tomography and Line-field confocal OCT (LC-OCT) as possible techniques to enable real-time visualization of pathological features, a standardized analysis and validation has not yet been performed.

Methods: One hundred forty lesions from patients diagnosed with atopic eczema (57), psoriasis (50), and contact dermatitis (33) were imaged using OCT and LC-OCT.

Organoid tumor models have emerged as a powerful tool in the fields of biology and medicine as such 3D structures grown from tumor cells recapitulate better tumor characteristics, making these tumoroids unique for personalized cancer research. Assessment of their functional behavior, particularly protein secretion, is of significant importance to provide comprehensive insights. Here, a label-free spectroscopic imaging platform is presented with advanced integrated optofluidic nanoplasmonic biosensor that enables real-time secretion analysis from single tumoroids.

A mesoporous theranostic platform for ultrasound and photoacoustic dual imaging-guided photothermal and enhanced starvation therapy for cancer.

Acta Biomater

July 2024

Ultrasound Department of The Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen & Longgang District People's Hospital of Shenzhen, Shenzhen, 518172, China. Electronic address:

Tumor starvation therapy utilizing glucose oxidase (GOx), has gained traction due to its non-invasive and bio-safe attributes. However, its effectiveness is often hampered by severe hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment (TME), limiting GOx's catalytic activity. To address this issue, a multifunctional nanosystem based on mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (MPDA NPs) was developled to alleviate TME hypoxia.
