Published: November 2012

The synthesis of silicene, graphene-like silicon, has generated very strong interest. Here, we reveal the growth of high aspect ratio, perfectly straight, and aligned silicon nanoribbons, exhibiting pyramidal cross section. They are multistacks of silicene and show in angle-resolved photoemission cone-like dispersion of their π and π* bands, at the X[overline] point of their one-dimensional Brillouin zone, with Fermi velocity of ~1.3 × 10(6) m sec(-1), which is very promising for potential applications.

Since the debut of silicene in the experimental stage more than a decade ago, the family of two-dimensional elementary layers beyond graphene, called Xenes or transgraphenes, has rapidly expanded to include elements from groups II to VI of the periodic table. This expansion has opened pathways for the engineering of elementary monolayers that are inherently different from their bulk counterparts in terms of fundamental physical properties. Common guidelines for synthesizing Xenes can be categorized into well-defined methodological approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • Group-14 Xenes like silicene, germanene, and stanene are being explored for their unique electronic properties that can be modified through covalent functionalization.
  • A new method for creating thin layers of covalently functionalized germanene through a chemical reaction has been introduced, producing sheets only about 6 nm thick, much thinner than previous methods.
  • The functionalization process increases the optical bandgap of germanene by 500 meV, indicating potential for advanced applications in electronics and catalysis.

Crystal phase engineering of silicene by Sn-modified Ag(111).

The synthesis of silicene by direct growth on silver is characterized by the formation of multiple phases and domains, posing severe constraints on the spatial charge conduction towards a technological transfer of silicene to electronic transport devices. Here we engineer the silicene/silver interface by two schemes, namely, either through decoration by Sn atoms, forming an AgSn surface alloy, or by buffering the interface with a stanene layer. Whereas in both cases Raman spectra confirm the typical features as expected from silicene, by electron diffraction we observe that a very well-ordered single-phase 4 × 4 monolayer silicene is stabilized by the decorated surface, while the buffered interface exhibits a sharp phase at all silicon coverages.

2D magnets have recently emerged as a host for unconventional phases and related phenomena. The prominence of 2D magnetism stems from its high amenability to external stimuli and structural variations. The low dimensionality facilitates competition between magnetic orders which may give rise to exchange bias, in particular in magnetic heterostructures.

In the present work, the electronic properties of doped silicene located on graphite and nickel substrates were investigated by first-principles calculations method. The results of this modeling indicate that the use of silicene as an anode material instead of bulk silicon significantly improves the characteristics of the electrode, increasing its resistance to cycling and significantly reducing the volume expansion during lithiation. Doping of silicene with phosphorus, in most cases, increases the electrical conductivity of the anode active material, creating conditions for increasing the rate of battery charging.
