Is the US AIDS drug assistance program cost-effective?

AIDS Behav

Center for AIDS Intervention Research, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin, 2071 North Summit Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202, USA.

Published: January 2013

Each year, the US AIDS drug assistance program (ADAP) provides access to prescription drugs-including antiretrovirals-to more than 110,000 persons living with HIV (PLWH) who lack adequate medical insurance. PLWH on effective antiretroviral therapy live longer lives, with enhanced quality of life, and are less likely to transmit HIV to others. There are thus significant benefits associated with the ADAP program. But there also are substantial costs. A mathematical model was used to assess the cost-effectiveness of the US ADAP program. Findings indicate that by providing antiretrovirals to underinsured persons, the ADAP program prevented 3,191 secondary infections and saved 24,922 quality-adjusted life years in 2008. The net cost per quality-adjusted life year saved was $11,955, which suggests that the ADAP program is cost-effective by conventional standards.

There is currently no established information for assessing the general welfare conditions and behavior of dairy cows housed in compost-bedded pack barns (CBPs) that allow access to pasture. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate and classify the welfare and behavior of dairy cows in three different housing conditions within CBPs in southern Brazil. During both the cold and hot seasons, nine farms were divided into three groups: CONV (conventional, large, full-time barns), ADAP (conventionally adapted, full-time barns), and PART (part-time barns).

Forest tree populations harbour high genetic diversity thanks to large effective population sizes and strong gene flow, allowing them to diversify through adaptation to local environmental pressures within dispersal distance. Many tree populations also experienced historical demographic fluctuations, including spatial population contraction or expansions at various temporal scales, which may constrain their ability to adapt to environmental variations. Our aim is to investigate how recent contraction and expansion events interfere with local adaptation, by studying patterns of adaptive divergence between closely related stands undergoing environmentally contrasted conditions, and having or not recently expanded.

Adap-BDCM: Adaptive Bilinear Dynamic Cascade Model for Classification Tasks on CNV Datasets.

Interdiscip Sci

December 2024

College of Computer Science and Technology (College of Data Science), Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan, 030600, China.

Copy number variation (CNV) is an essential genetic driving factor of cancer formation and progression, making intelligent classification based on CNV feasible. However, there are a few challenges in the current machine learning and deep learning methods, such as the design of base classifier combination schemes in ensemble methods and the selection of layers of neural networks, which often result in low accuracy. Therefore, an adaptive bilinear dynamic cascade model (Adap-BDCM) is developed to further enhance the accuracy and applicability of these methods for intelligent classification on CNV datasets.

Objective: AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs) are state-administered programs that pay for medical care and medication for people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States. In October 2021, the federal policy requiring that clients recertify for the program every 6 months was repealed, giving states the authority to set their own recertification policies. However, little data exist on the costs and health effects of alternative recertification schedules.

Objective: The Avoidance of Daily Activities Photo Scale for Patients With Shoulder Pain (ADAP Shoulder Scale) was developed to assess pain-related avoidance behavior during daily activities in people with shoulder pain. However, its measurement properties must be verified according to international guidelines. As such, this study investigated the following 4 measurement properties of the ADAP Shoulder Scale: reliability, measurement errors, convergent validity, and floor and ceiling effects.
