Despite substantial research in the past few decades, only slight progress has been made toward developing biocompatible, tissue-engineered scaffolds for heart valve leaflets that can withstand the dynamic pressure inside the heart. Recent progress on the development of hybrid scaffolds, which are composed of a thin metal mesh enclosed by multi-layered tissue, appear to be promising for heart valve engineering. This approach retains all the advantages of biological scaffolds while developing a strong extracellular matrix backbone to withstand dynamic loading. This study aims to test the inflammatory response of hybrid tissue-engineered leaflets based on characterizing the activation of macrophage cells cultured on the surfaces of the tissue construct. The results indicate that integration of biological layers around a metal mesh core-regardless of its type-may reduce the evoked inflammatory responses by THP-1 monocyte-like cells. This observation implies that masking a metal implant within a tissue construct prior to implantation can hide it from the immune system and may improve the implant's biocompatibility.

() is a bacterium usually present in the gut microbiome of quadruped mammals. is not considered pathogenic for humans; however, several reports have identified it as the etiological agent in cases of chorioamnionitis, postpartum pneumonia and fever of unknown origin. Furthermore, it has been isolated in samples from patients with endocarditis both with and without heart valve replacement.

Aims: Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common valvular disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality, with a strong genetic basis. This study aimed to identify a mutation in a family with MVP and to characterize the valve phenotype in LTBP2 knockout (KO) mice.
Methods And Results: Exome sequencing and segregation analysis were performed on a large family with MVP.

Introduction: The severity of mitral stenosis (MS) is commonly assessed using mitral valve area (MVA) measured with transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). The dimensionless index (DI) of mitral valve (MV) was recently studied in degenerative MS. We evaluated DI MV in rheumatic MS and studied its relationship with clinical outcomes.

Macrophages are known to support cardiac development and homeostasis, contributing to tissue remodeling and repair in the adult heart. However, it remains unclear whether embryonic macrophages also respond to abnormalities in the developing heart. Previously, we reported that the structural protein Sorbs2 promotes the development of the second heart field, with its deficiency resulting in atrial septal defects (ASD).
