Essential to iron homeostasis is the transport of iron by the bilobal protein human serum transferrin (hTF). Each lobe (N- and C-lobe) of hTF forms a deep cleft which binds a single Fe(3+). Iron-bearing hTF in the blood binds tightly to the specific transferrin receptor (TFR), a homodimeric transmembrane protein. After undergoing endocytosis, acidification of the endosome initiates the release of Fe(3+) from hTF in a TFR-mediated process. Iron-free hTF remains tightly bound to the TFR at acidic pH; following recycling back to the cell surface, it is released to sequester more iron. Efficient delivery of iron is critically dependent on hTF/TFR interactions. Therefore, identification of the pH-specific contacts between hTF and the TFR is crucial. Recombinant protein production has enabled deconvolution of this complex system. The studies reviewed herein support a model in which pH-induced interrelated events control receptor-stimulated iron release from each lobe of hTF.

The cooling procedure markedly diminishes the quality of guinea pig () sperms, primarily because their membranes are highly susceptible to this process. This susceptibility triggers the generation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals, ultimately leading to lipid peroxidation in the sperm membrane. Surprisingly, there has been a lack of research on the use of Tris-based extenders to safeguard guinea pig sperm under refrigeration conditions.

Background: Nondaily smoking is a widespread and increasingly prevalent pattern of use. To date, no effective treatment approach for nondaily smoking has been identified.
Objective: This study aimed to conduct an unblinded randomized controlled trial to evaluate proof-of-concept markers of the Smiling instead of Smoking (SiS) app, a smartphone app for smoking cessation, designed specifically for people who smoke less than daily, within the framework of positive psychology.

Here, we report the X-ray structure of the adduct formed upon reaction of cisplatin, one of the most prescribed anticancer agents for the clinic treatment of solid tumors, with the apo-form of human serum transferrin (hTF). Two Pt binding sites were identified in both molecules of the adduct present in the crystal asymmetric unit: Pt binds close to the side chains of Met256 and Met499 at the N- and C-lobe, respectively. In the crystal structure, the cisplatin moiety bound to Met256 also interacts with Ser616 from a symmetry related molecule.

This study explores the layer-by-layer (LBL) modification of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fibers for effective Mg/Li separation. It employs an LBL method of surface modification using polyelectrolytes, specifically aiming to enhance ion selectivity and improve the efficiency of lithium extraction from brines or lithium battery wastes, which is critical for battery recycling and other industrial applications. The modification process involves coating the hydrolyzed PAN fibers with alternating layers of positively charged polyelectrolytes, such as poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), polyethyleneimine (PEI), or poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and negatively charged polyelectrolytes, such as poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), to form polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs).

Objectives: This qualitative study aimed to: (1) identify socio-ecological barriers to behavior change-oriented dementia (AD/ADRD) prevention from the perspectives of healthcare professionals, and (2) propose strategies to address these barriers during a clinical trial for an AD/ADRD prevention program ().
Method: Multidisciplinary healthcare professionals involved in geriatric care ( = 26, experience > 17 years) from diverse clinics within a medical center participated in focus groups. Using the Socio-Ecological Model (SEM), 5 focus groups were conducted to identify individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, and societal barriers.
