Perioperative imaging using various appropriate modalities is critical to the successful planning and performance of any orthopedic surgery. Although not an absolute prerequisite, the use of intraoperative imaging considerably facilitates the smooth and effective execution of minimally invasive osteosynthesis (MIO). However, the risk of overexposure to radiation is real, particularly when considering its insidious effect over time. Therefore, the primary concern of the surgeon must be safety of the surgical team. This article outlines basic, simple steps that will be effective in reducing radiation exposure, which in turn will make MIO a safe alternative to open reduction and internal fixation.

Background: The Pre-EMPT study aimed to determine if structured exercise could reduce length of stay, post-operative complications and improve fitness and health-related quality of life (HQRL) in patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and oesophagectomy.
Methods: A prospective non-randomised trial compared a standard care pathway (control) to a structured prehabilitation exercise programme (intervention) commenced before NAC and surgery for oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Length of hospital stay and post-operative complications were recorded.

Introduction: The indication for endoscopic third ventriculostomy is often contested in children younger than 1 year. This study aims to establish the benefits of this modality in children with idiopathic congenital aqueductal stenosis.
Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on patients <1 year old with idiopathic congenital aqueductal stenosis undergoing endoscopic third ventriculostomy between 2004 and 2020.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate preoperative factors associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) utilization and outcomes for patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and tumour thrombus (TT). Radical nephrectomy with thrombectomy is a standard treatment for patients with RCC and associated TT. Morbidity and mortality rates tend to correlate with aggressiveness of tumour and TT level.

Post-surgical spinal infection occurs in up to 20% of patients, despite aggressive peri-operative antibiotic treatments. To improve prophylaxis, we have designed and evaluated an ultrasound-activated prophylactic antibiotic release system to combat post-surgical bacterial survival. Polylactic acid (PLA) clips (1 cm) were 3D-printed with an interior reservoir (0.

Spinal cord segmentation is clinically relevant and is notably used to compute spinal cord cross-sectional area (CSA) for the diagnosis and monitoring of cord compression or neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis. While several semi and automatic methods exist, one key limitation remains: the segmentation depends on the MRI contrast, resulting in different CSA across contrasts. This is partly due to the varying appearance of the boundary between the spinal cord and the cerebrospinal fluid that depends on the sequence and acquisition parameters.
