Miller (1956) identified his famous limit of 7 ± 2 items based in part on absolute identification-the ability to identify stimuli that differ on a single physical dimension, such as lines of different length. An important aspect of this limit is its independence from perceptual effects and its application across all stimulus types. Recent research, however, has identified several exceptions. We investigate an explanation for these results that reconciles them with Miller's work. We find support for the hypothesis that the exceptional stimulus types have more complex psychological representations, which can therefore support better identification. Our investigation uses data sets with thousands of observations for each participant, which allows the application of a new technique for identifying psychological representations: the structural forms algorithm of Kemp and Tenenbaum (2008). This algorithm supports inferences not possible with previous techniques, such as multidimensional scaling.

Purpose Of Review: The use of stem cell therapy is a rapidly evolving and progressing frontier of science that has been used to treat illnesses such as malignancies, immunodeficiencies, and metabolic syndromes. This review aims to give an overview of the use of stem cell therapy in the treatment of pain caused by diabetic neuropathy, osteoarthritis, and other spinal cord pathologies.

Recent Findings: Pain is defined as a generalized or localized feeling of distress related to a physical or emotional stimulus and can be caused by a multitude of pathologies.

A lanthanide ion-based metal-organic framework (Eu-TATAB nanorods) was designed and synthesized as an effective tri-mode nanoprobe for sensitive and portable detection of ethanol content in a water-ethanol mixture. The assay was based on the responsive properties of Eu-TATAB nanorods to ethanol stimulus and their adaptive encapsulation capability towards optically active lanthanides. With the addition of ethanol to the Eu-TATAB nanorods, the structure was destroyed, resulting in a decrease in luminescence, electrochemiluminescence, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric signals by perturbing energy transfer in the Eu-TATAB nanorods.

In neuroscience, accurately correlating brain activity with stimuli and other events requires precise synchronization between neural data and event timing. To achieve this, purpose-built synchronization devices are often used to detect events. This paper introduces SyncGenie, a programmable synchronization device designed for a range of uses in neuroscience research-primarily as a "trigger box" to align neurophysiological data with physical stimulus events, among other possibilities.

Stimulus-responsive molecular materials are highly desirable because of the wide range of their potential applications. In particular, switching of physical properties opens application pathways for molecular materials as sensors or actuators. Property switching in solids can be achieved by inducing single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) phase transitions.

Background: The objective was to characterize the colostrum proteome of primiparous Holstein cows in association with immunoglobulin G (IgG) content. Immediately after calving, colostrum samples were collected from 18 cows to measure IgG concentration. Based on colostrum IgG content, samples were classified through cluster analysis and were identified as poor, average, and excellent quality.
