The co-detection of SARS-CoV-2 variant with other respiratory virus has been extensively investigated. However, conclusive evidence remains elusive and conflicted. This study investigated the source- and age-dependent prevalence, incidence, and co-detection of multiple viral infections in children younger than 18 years old who presented with clinical symptoms indicative of respiratory infections during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Rhinoviruses are a major cause of respiratory infections, including asthma infectious exacerbations. Human rhinovirus 16 (RV-16) has been widely shown to infect respiratory epithelial cells and the human lung vascular endothelium. RV-16 was also observed to induce an IFN-β-dependent mechanism of antiviral intracellular mechanisms based on OAS-1 and PKR activity.

Rhinovirus (RV), classified into RV-A, RV-B, and RV-C, is a prevalent cause of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Here, we analysed RV infection and its clinical implications among outpatients with acute upper RTIs. Demographic data, baseline comorbidities, clinical symptoms, and health outcomes of RV-infected patients (n = 849) were compared with influenza (n = 417).

Molecular methods permit measurements of viral genomic RNA as well as of the negative-strand template generated during rhinovirus replication. As such, assays of negative-strand RNA can provide a means for relative quantification of levels of double-stranded RNA that is generated during replication and that interacts with pattern recognition receptors to activate the host immune response. Here we provide RT-PCR protocols for quantitative assays for rhinovirus genomic and negative-strand RNAs.

Rhinovirus (RV)-C, discovered in 2006, binds to human cadherin-related family member 3 expressed on ciliated cells. RV-C is the cause of severe respiratory illness in children with asthma. Unlike rhinovirus-A and B, very little is known about the RV-C biology or pathogenic mechanisms.
