All-conjugated triblock polyfluorenes with well-defined molecular weights and low polydispersities are synthesized via chain-growth Suzuki-Miyaura polymerization. Ionization of pendant alkylbromide chains by pyridine affords amphiphilic triblock polyelectrolytes with neutral/charged/neutral or charged/neutral/charged segments. The immiscible blocks lead to aggregation in polar and nonpolar solvents, and to complex surface morphologies depending on the polarity of the substrate. These triblock polyelectrolytes can also be used as interfacial layers in polymer light-emitting diodes to facilitate electron injection from aluminum.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create high molecular weight polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) micelles that can effectively thicken aqueous solutions at low concentrations for industrial use.
  • Redox-initiated RAFT polymerization produced various block polyelectrolytes with significant molecular weights, which formed PEC micelles that exhibited viscoelastic gel characteristics at notably low concentrations.
  • The research compared the effects of different polyelectrolyte architectures on gel behavior, highlighted their responses to environmental factors like salinity and temperature, and utilized techniques like dynamic light scattering to characterize the resulting micelles.

Most triblock copolymer-based physical hydrogels form three-dimensional networks through micellar packing, and formation of polymer loops represents a topological defect that diminishes hydrogel elasticity. This effect can be mitigated by maximizing the fraction of elastically effective bridges in the hydrogel network. Herein, we report hydrogels constructed by complexing oppositely charged multiblock copolymers designed with a sequence pattern that maximizes the entropic and enthalpic penalty of micellization.

Poly(ethylene oxide)- and Polyzwitterion-Based Thermoplastic Elastomers for Solid Electrolytes.

Materials (Basel)

May 2024

National Key Laboratory of Biobased Transportation Fuel Technology, International Research Center for X Polymers, Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China.

In this article, ABA triblock copolymer (tri-BCP) thermoplastic elastomers with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) middle block and polyzwitterionic poly(4-vinylpyridine) propane-1-sulfonate (PVPS) outer blocks were synthesized. The PVPSPEOPVPS tri-BCPs were doped with lithium bis-(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) and used as solid polyelectrolytes (SPEs). The thermal properties and microphase separation behavior of the tri-BCP/LiTFSI hybrids were studied.

Flexoelectric Ionic Liquid-Grafted Triblock Copolymers for Energy Harvesting under Flexural Deformation.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

November 2023

School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, University of Akron, Akron, Ohio 44325, United States.

The goal of the present article is to develop flexoelectric polyelectrolyte elastomers for energy harvesting based on a poly(ethylene glycol)--poly(propylene glycol)--poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG--PPG--PEG-DMA) triblock grafted with an ionic liquid (IL) such as allylmethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) imide (AMIMTFSI). The IL-grafted triblock copolymer network possesses a balance of reasonably good ionic conductivity and high ion polarization during cantilever bending. Of particular importance is the achievement of high flexoelectric coefficients in some flexoelectric polyelectrolyte elastomer (FPE) compositions reaching 1368 μC/m at ambient temperature during mechanical deformation under intermittent square-wave bending mode.

Tetrakis(dialkylamino)phosphonium (TKDAAP) compounds exhibit extraordinary base resistance, a prerequisite feature for high-performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs). It is, however, challenging to synthesize a TKDAAP compound with reactive functionality that can be used to link the cation to a polymer backbone. In this study, two TKDAAP compounds with alkyne functionality were synthesized and incorporated into an azide-modified SBS triblock copolymer backbone via Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) "click" chemistry.
